Re: The Still New What Did You Last Do Thread
Finally got a proper Half-Life style VOX system working for my project. Just learned how to use mixins as well as String.AppendFormat and String.Split and they helped make it possible. I can write out my VOX sentences inside the mixin in a layout near identical to the one used by GoldSource and use the string functions to convert them into sound names and add them to an array that then is played by my custom sound sequence function. It is a somewhat complicated setup but it works really well and is really easy to expand with additional VOX sentences.

Yeah I loved Half-Life's VOX system, at least the ideas behind it at any rate.
Games really could use a lot more flexibility and Half-Life definitely went in the right direction for that. But ultimately the systems are still quite limited. Maybe that's a good thing, but I would argue - I'd like to see games be able to run full apps for things like computer terminals, and have NPC's able to speak through true speech synthesis (though I know speech synthesis still needs some improvement before it can sound completely natural).
I'd also someday like to see NPC's able to carry more in-depth contextual conversation about their surroundings, as if being completely aware of what is happening in the game and trying to rationalize the events they are experiencing.

Modders have done that for Bethesda games. E.g. for Skyrim.Rachael wrote:I'd like to see games [...] have NPC's able to speak through true speech synthesis

I'd love to see one of those speech AIs make it to a modular level... Imagine a fully voice acted game where characters can actually call the player character by whatever name they've picked. Not to mention support for mod dialogue...

While it'd be really cool for video games to do some neural TTS to actually say your names in an RPG, there's two problems:
1. Neural stalls and stutters. Try something on anything using tacotron with something short and watch out for the results that go into the 12 second limit for some neuralized drunken stumbling. "Hello Fred, frrerfefrerfefer.e.. fuckfrferffrfe.frededeededd. and welcome to baldur's gate. .......frfreerreereefefr"
.
2. SAG-AFTRA wouldn't like it, most likely. Time will tell until this can of worms is opened in the AAA space as another way to weasel out of paying actors to say things they never agreed to.

That's one high tech mod for skyrim right there. Yeah, TTS in video games have their own crippling flaw of creating uncanny valley with the voice but it ain't no sin to wish for games having NPCs with their own AI creating their own unique lines through TTS. It might happen, but maybe after a lot of years.
And here's the animation i recently created.
Seriously, it feels good to finish something.

Been a long time since I was here...
I had a sudden interest in Trailblazer again, and decided to mod the newest version to my own tastes (as usual). Been blazing through all sorts of mapsets, mainly the Doomer Boards Projects ('cuz I wanted to play 'em in order, so that I could then play AUGER:ZENITH), but I also picked up the Doom Tribute and Valiant again.
Besides that, I updated the Brutal Trailblazer patch so that it'd work with the newest versions of BD and TB.
Quite a bit of modding, I must say... but that's scratching the surface...

...And i literally suffered to make Feng Yu, due to the detail that i was aiming for with him. No wonder, he was fucking CRUSHED by a closet door in Changed, so why not make him have a little bit of vengence?

Re: The Still New What Did You Last Do Thread
Was searching for something for my wife (this is a recuring theme for me) and found a box of my old drawings. Back in 2005-2006 I did some contract work as a data entry clerk for the Bureau of statistics, they drip feed us work as it turned up and if we finished it fast we just stat around talking crap. So I usually spent more time drawing then working (miss that job). So I've got around 600 of these mostly on notepad and printer pages.
Found one I really had to share, then slapped a couple more in because why not.
