What's wrong with M/D? After all that is the international norm to place the larger unit first!
It only becomes a problem with the out of order Y appended to it in the US.

For dates, it may be the international standard, but is it the normGraf Zahl wrote:What's wrong with M/D? After all that is the international norm to place the larger unit first!![]()

In Japan, yes. They use YYYY/MM/DD so it's logical.

Re: ZDoom 2.3.1 released
All my watches are straight analog, so I never have that problem. Of course, if I ever get hit on the head and suffer some short-term memory loss, my watch will not tell me what year or month it is. Come to think of it, even if I don't get knocked on the head my watch won't do that. Heh. (A couple of my watches do have a tiny box with the date on it. Which means that if I forget to change the date at the end of February or other months with less than 31 days, then all bets are off.)Enjay wrote:My frustration is shared also as my watch, marketed and sold in the UK (but made in Japan) uses M/D to display the date.
In an effort to prevent another of Randy's threads being derailed successfully, I have a relevant question. The news post say: Fixes a performance regression introduced in 2.3.0. What was the "performance regression", and what difference will the player see in 2.3.1?

2.3.0 used Windows's performance counter as profiling timer - but ironically it's a performance killer all by itself.

I live in the US and I think M/D/Y is odd. I use Y-M-D whenever I can, and D-M-Y in almost all other cases. Typically, that means I write the month out with a 3-letter abbreviation in order to avoid confusion.
But I'm also the kind of person who owns a 24hr analog clock.

I think the way the Brits do it is strangest of all.
They do DD-MM-YYYY, which can look really confusing when you're trying to decide if they mean April First or January Fourth. It's even mind-bending when they describe a date beyond the 12th of the month. 31-10-2008, anybody?
Personally, I prefer YYYY-MM-DD, for so many reasons, but mostly because of its logical left-most-significant ordering which coincides with regular numbers.

Your mind is easily bent.SoulPriestess wrote:It's even mind-bending when they describe a date beyond the 12th of the month. 31-10-2008, anybody?

It's when both day and month are 12 or lower that it can be annoying if you don't know which convention did the writer follow. As soon as there's a 13 or above, you know that's the day and the other is the month.

The best part is, as easy as it seems to instantly register that, some human minds (i.e. mine) will continue to stare at the 13 for a few seconds before figuring out what the devil is going on. ;P
Of course, this is also coming from the same guy who will often date papers the 32nd of a month or some other illogical something just to throw people off.

You do that, too?Xaser wrote:Of course, this is also coming from the same guy who will often date papers the 32nd of a month or some other illogical something just to throw people off.

My favorite is February 31st.

Aaaah! It's contagious!
I'm partial to February 30, myself. You'd be surprised how easy it is for the victim recipient to not notice. It's a perfectly legitimate date in every other month, eh?

Or to really throw them for a loop, April 31st.
(Makes a good April Fool's joke, when discussing release dates for the topic at hand)
It just looks too natural.

Re: ZDoom 2.3.1 released
I feel like I'm trying to cover my own tracks here, but I consider such conversation-shifting as less of a "derail" than a continuation. Most of everyone has said what they're going to say, and the discussion starts to drift in different directions. To further the metaphor, it's not a derail but simply the train continuing along its tracks after it has reached its station. The tracks simply go forth, elsewhere. And, in some unfortunate cases, run off cliffs.
But you tried. If someone along the line has another relevant question, fire away! Most of us are fresh out of them, that's all. ;P
P.S. -- I seriously want to "release" something this upcoming April 31 now. Hopefully my saying so won't spoil my plans too bad, but... hmm. I could make a Doomscript joke, couldn't I?

Re: ZDoom 2.3.1 released
I prefer 29th of February, but only on even numbered, not leap years (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 etc). It takes a while for an alarming amount of people to cotton on to it.Xaser wrote:
