Re: MAPINFO conversion tool
Will this also work in reverse or between different formats? In particular, I have a ZMAPINFO lump I’d like to convert to UMAPINFO, EMAPINFO, & Hexen MAPINFO format. These are all for the same PWAD, before you ask. I was adding lumps for all MAPINFO formats for the sake of universal compatibility.

No, sorry.Ultimate Freedoomer wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2024 7:48 pm Will this also work in reverse or between different formats?
Problem with converting between different formats, like from ZMAPINFO to UMAPINFO and EMAPINFO, is that their features don't necessarily map one-to-one, and when features are available they are not necessarily used in the same way. For example, ZMAPINFO defines episodes as their own thing, with the map slot the episode starts on as a property of the episode definition. UMAPINFO does it the other way around; there are no episode definitions and instead a map may have the property of starting an episode.
For this reason, a simple converter, that reads one line, translates it, write the translation, then reads the next line, would not work. What you'd need is a program that reads the MAPINFO stuff, builds a model of the maps, episodes, and so on defined therein, and then generates fresh MAPINFOs based on this model it has built. It's significantly more complex work.
