Or keep everything in a DRCS and back up every hour. ;)

EDIT: and by back up, I mean automatically pull any new changes into backup repos - not that you have to do it manually, but occasionally you'll have archives that need backing up, too. :P

So, last night I setup my two 750 GB Seagates in a RAID1 array with Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. As I was downloading drivers and installing Windows updates, I had time to kill, so I did some browsing. Oh, the horror! It seems Intel's RAID is another point of failure to worry about. That didn't sit too well with me, since during one of the reboot cycles, it had already decided it needed to verify the array. Combined with the poor reputation these drives are starting to get from people who have had them die after a few months (myself included), I'm now scared to put anything on them.

I now think I'll dump these drives on ebay, because people are buying them (though I do feel somewhat dirty trying to pawn them off on someone else). Then I'll get a drive from a different manufacturer and backup to an external device.

Also, it's not exactly the same model but this article says Seagate's harddrives are just not designed for RAID...
One forum user alleges that he/she was told by Seagate support: “Unfortunately, we do not support Linux.” And, “Again, these drives are not meant to be used in a RAID environment so we are not going to be working towards a solution for this environment.”

I think that only applies to hardware RAID. Something about desktop drives retrying several times when an error occurs, but a RAID drive will just let the error go through and let the RAID correct it from a different drive. So if you have a desktop drive attached to a hardware RAID controller, it might just drop the entire drive from the array while waiting for it to finish retrying.

I've now got a Western Digital Black drive to replace the Seagates, because I just don't trust their 7200.11 line.

I have to say that Newegg's packaging has gone remarkably crap, though. I opened up the box and found the drive wrapped in bubble wrap, with a piece of crumpled up paper for padding. The drive was up against one side of the box, and all the bubbles on that side of the drive were completely popped. Fortunately, the drive wasn't DOA, but I'm running the extended SMART test right now. So far, so good.

Dammit, I've already returned the drive to them. Well, I've sent them an e-mail, so I'll see how that goes.
