It was struggling with a lot of the details in a few of the rooms, especially the first area of the second scene. That's when it went south and I had to reboot.

I was having a blast until my ATI-enhanced PC locked up and crashed on me with its own brand of tutti-fruity.
It was struggling with a lot of the details in a few of the rooms, especially the first area of the second scene. That's when it went south and I had to reboot.

I loved that level too! And the remake is pretty nice!! I love it! I hope you will remake more levels from episode 2 and 3. I liked episode 1, but im a little tired of it (played too much XDD) Btw, is there a list of remakes from original levels?

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the kind words, and I'm glad to hear you're all enjoying the level! I don't 'spose some kind soul could help me figure out how to post this to id's Doom Wad file server? I'm reading instructions for how to do it, but they seem to all assume I know what I'm doing, which I don't, and skip the basics. If somebody knows of a beginners guide on how to do it, or can just give me the steps quickly, I'd be really grateful, and maybe give you a sneak peek of my next levels!
For those that commented about a link, sorry that I didn't have a link in the first post. I SWEAR I made one, so I must have somehow not saved the edit or something. Anyway, it is up there now.
@BlazingPheonix, don't you ever check your PMs?
Sorry to those who tried to run it with Ultimate Doom...I did want to use lots of Doom 2 monsters, textures and weapons, even though I know that made things confusing. I did put it in the info text though...
Thanks for the feedback, those of you who took time to write some criticisms. I've read it all and will consider it as I work on new levels. A couple notes I wanted to comment on:
Meg@Doomer, about some areas being unnecessary, I actually did this on purpose. My thinking was, if this were a real life facility that had been taken over, there really WOULD be a lot of rooms without anything critical in them. I'm not a big fan of FPS games that run the player on a linear rail through the level a la Call of Duty, so I felt that this would help the level feel more real as well as more non-linear. My hope is that the graphics quality and immersion into the world is enough to get people interested in exploring every last corner of the map more than just me leading them by the nose and forcing them to visit every area. Anybody else want to sound off on how they feel about this? If I'm the only one that thinks this is a good idea, I can easily change it as Meg suggests.
To those that commented about the slowdown, I'm trying to do two things on my next levels:
1)push the graphics quite a bit farther, and
2)improve the framerate of all areas to make the levels more playable on older machines.
Thanks again for the kind words! It makes me want to make more levels for you all!
Ben

As for the extra areas - I like them. I enjoyed exploring everywhere because the facility was indeed interesting enough for me to want to do so. Anyway, there is very little in the map that doesn't have a parallel in the original E2M4.

My thoughts are exactly in line with yours. Yes, there is a place for linearity in maps, but there is also a place for non-linearity. Requiring a player to visit every area is unnecessary and, often, undesirable. Maps with "extra" areas appeal to me a great deal, but I understand that others might consider them extraneous. Therefore, my rule of thumb is this: as a map-maker, if building an "extra" area gives me some satisfaction, then I'll do it. The fact that some players dislike such areas will not deter me from making them.real_trisk wrote:.... about some areas being unnecessary, I actually did this on purpose... As for E2M4 Redux, acknowledge that some may not like extra areas, but don't get rid of them just because a section of the public would rather see them done away with.

Holy s**t, that was really something! The hydroponics and garden reminded me of the infamous "groves" from System Shock 1. Even today, I'm occassionaly still having nightmares about those...

Even though my computer graphics card can barely hold the awesomeness of this wad it is one of my favorite remake wads now.
Bet you can make a nasty remake of House of Pain (E3M4)

Just played this earlier today - VERY impressive what you've acheived with GZDoom and E2M4 here. Got quite lost when I was meant to go through the last teleport for some reason. Seemed to think I needed to go back to Redux A and find a yellow key door instead
Made it through in the end. My main complaint would be that the stealth or otherwise practically invisible enemies were a pain in the arse and every time I had to fight a cacolich I seemed painfully outmatched, either due to my environment really working against me, or their attacks being too powerful.
Fantastic job all the same though, I was mostly playing just to see how advanced it all was.
