In older versions, when you use deathmatch=1 the "arms" graphic on the statusbar would change into "frags".

In 56, it still displays "arms" eventhough you're in deathmatch. :(

Right enough.

It works OK if you start a game with the -deathmatch parameter, but if you type deathmatch 1 at the console and then start a new game, you get the effect you mention. A frag count is displayed, but on top of the arms graphic. However, by my count, it's 53, not 56 :)
