I don't know if I'm missing something here or if there is an option already for this that I'm just not seeing, but one thing I would really like is an option to disable the HUD when viewing the automap. I think it wastes a lot of space having it in view, and it looks especially annoying when using scaling options other than the default ones. Case in point, when using Ashes Afterglow:

If it's not too complicated to add, I think this option would be very convenient to have :)

From the looks of it, it seems that the UI user scale being set is ideal when actually playing the game in the 3D viewport, but absolutely horrendous when it's drawn in the automap. :')

The question though is, if this might be caused by the way the status bar was set up in the SBARINFO (or ZScript HUD?). I haven't actually checked the mod so this is just conjecture.

It's not much better when playing vanilla - I mean, it is better by virtue of the vanilla hud being smaller, but otherwise the same thing happens:

Whereas this is what I would much rather prefer when viewing the automap (this happens when I play with a mod that disables the fullscreen hud entirely, not just from the automap), makes it much easier to zoom in and out and check specific areas:
