Exactly. Doing such texts right is very hard and can easily backfire.
In case of doubt, just ignore all slang and nonsense parts and do a proper translation, that's always better than something broken.
But I stand by what I said earlier: It is not important to literally translate such texts but provide something that conveys an equivalent joke. Most of the fortune cookie texts completely fall flat in other languages. Just take the line about the drowned cat/wet pussy. It makes no sense in German to translate that one literally because the resulting line would just be un-funny nonsense. I just replaced it with something equally suggestive that only works in German but when translated back to English would be just as lame as the original line in German.
I've seen far too often that translators try to stay too close to the original with such content, resulting in really shitty results.

Yeah, and it also depends on what you want to achieve, and what comes closest to the original intention.

That drowned cat message is relatively easy for me, if I go for a vulgar translation. But if I have to censor it slightly it gets a little more tricky. Thankfully most of them arent too difficult, and sometimes, only sometimes, I can look at other translations that I can understand just by looking at them, and in the rare instance do a Google Translate. Believe it or not, GT CAN be useful when it wants to, depending on what you choose to translate and from what language.

Except for this maybe - Man trapped in pantry has ass in jam.

Funny that you just selected that in the sheet. I have a rough idea about what this is supposed to sound like.

I replaced that one entirely as well, as well as the one where "man fart in church". The wordplay in these lines does not get carried over to German - the results have no meaning and are not funny.

In Romanian it does, except that it sounds more gross than it does in English, or at least thats my perception of it.

The following strings need translation:

Common Tab:
MISCMNU_CLEANMENU - "Disable Menu Clean Scaling"
OPTMNU_WRITEINI - "Save current settings"

GZDoom Engine Strings Tab:
GMPLYMNU_ALWAYSSPAWNMULTI - "Always spawn multiplayer objects"

I'm glad I'm done with the translations honestly, good grief going through Strife was a chore... I spent half a day on them just to know I'm done with it...

Even going through all the games in Raze was faster... so much dialogue in that game, and much of it is also repeating -_- .

Yeah, it was definitely the hardest part of it all, but those fantasy inspired intermission texts for Heretic and Hexen were also quite un-fun to translate.
The Strife dialogue is by far the biggest chunk of text.

It's an impenetrable wall of text, that's its main issue. Not hard, just long and tedious. Very tedious.

Hexetic had its moments but mostly when it came to death notifications, some weapons, and MP kill messages, those were quite unenjoyable in parts... and my only disappointment in the whole affair. They work but they also could've been more.

MENUDEF missing strings

Post by SanyaWaffles »

These strings are missing from the LANGUAGE.csv I think as they are not showing up in the menus.

SCALEMNU_INTER
SCALEMNU_BORDER
SCALEMNU_FACTOR
SCALEMNU_RATIO
OPTMNU_WRITEINI
MAPCNTRLMNU_TOGGLEROTATE

there might be more, but these are the ones that I could find.

The Internationalization page on the ZDoom wiki could probably be updated:

-Strife is now supported in Finnish
-All Google sheets have been combined into one.

I thought I should mention here that Romanian translations are complete and have been for a while now, both Raze and GZDoom, but the wiki has not been updated to reflect this.

I wanted to edit that myself but it seems an account may be required. Fair enough, I'll make one soon.

Edit: Well that's stupid. Apparently "seed" and "sinisterseed" are "banned names" lol.

You have to ask an admin. The Wiki is not spam safe.

Every possible combination of character is "banned", registering has to be done by PMing one of the active wiki admins (Rachael, Blueshadow, or me) with a valid email address so that you can receive the temporary password.

The Internationalization article is now open to edits about the status of translations in Raze as well.
