The Cronus Camp for Wayward Boys - Stealth Horror Game 1.0

Post by ImpieTwo »

A stealth horror thingy based on Sneaky Doom by Josh771. You guys can play with this 5 level demo and tell me what you think.

Play a young boy sent to a reeducation camp what may be run by irresponsible cultists. Rely on being small, silent, and hidden in darkness to survive, or use booby traps, fire extinguishers, and big, loud guns if that doesn't work out so well.

I'm barely at the second level, but I can say this:
This is really great so far!

I love the atmosphere of the levels and the stealth mechanics.
When the music starts playing, I jump off my seat to find the closest hiding place possible.

But there are a lot of ACS errors:

It just spams this message into the console in both levels I have played.
I assume it's just a placeholder, considering it's just a demo, but thought I would just let you know.

Also:
Spoiler:
And a small thing: could the player's messages (kid's thoughts) be logged into the console?
They go too fast for me to read properly, so opening the console to read them would be handy.

Edit: While I'm here, I've caught some small errors:

Looks like imgur messed up the order of the images. ://
Either way, at the bottom of the automap screens, it says the map number.

Yeah there's a lot of unused stuff from Sneaky Doom I still need to clean out, so that's where "scoped" is coming from.

Script 102 is the dynamic music script, which i removed from the prologue since it wasnt used, except i forgot i had jitterheads on the map trying to call it. I replaced them with "mannequins" that dont call any scripts.

Let me know if the "scoped" error is still there. I cut part of the code that called it.

So, the project was updated, yes?
It's quite a big file, so I want to make sure to not redownload for no reason.

Also, not wanting to make another post, (because I didn't see your reply) I updated my above post with some texture errors.

And also another thing: could the jitterheads attack instantly?
Because I was able to just move backwards and avoid all their attacks at one point.

Edit: And I have finished it.
That was a fun experience.
Though, by the end it lost most of the scariness factor.

I could easily outrun the monsters and gun them down with the fire extinguisher, which I haven't realised I had up until the end.
The fire extinguisher is quite powerful, a single burst can knock them down with good rng.
And death traps were pretty plentiful too.
But I like the fact that only the death traps can kill them and other means just stun them.
Unless the gun can kill them too, I haven't really tested it, as I was rather saving ammo.

Also about the attack that flicks something at a wall, what is it for?
Is it supposed to alert enemies to the wall that got hit?
Because it didn't seem to work for me.

Now for the hopes for this project:
I would love to see more monsters around, maybe something that could crawl in the vent to catch players off guard?
And I think it could use some balancing: mostly making the fire extinguisher less powerful and making death traps more scarce.
I think like, 1 death trap per 5 maps in a secret would be ideal, but that's just my opinion.

All in all, it was a blast to play through and I hope to see more of it!

I was brainstorming a monster that could fit in the vents for level 4 onward but i couldn't think of anything good. Wanted something scarier than just rats. There are indeed two other monster types that pop up within the first ten levels.

Good find on all the texture issues! I'll fix those up when I can. The extinguisher shouldn't be that powerful. It takes most of one extinguisher to drop a jitterhead, or at least it does when i play it.

Also yes, the washer makes a noise where it hits that has a chance to alert monsters just like your footsteps, whistle, and weapons do. so they don't always notice it.

Spoiler:
I think I know what's the deal with the fire extinguisher: whenever the target isn't alerted, the damage is increased.
I think it might be a leftover from Sneaky Doom.

Oh! So the washer isn't a guaranteed alert? That explains a few things.

Well, I will look forwards to seeing more of this project.
Best of luck!

ahh, yes it is! i forgot about that! I can adjust it so it isn't as broken.

EDIT: Added a fun new monster to the later levels of the demo. Also fixed the monster code so they aren't so easily stunned when unaware.

EDIT 2: CRAP, forgot the actual code for it. This is what I get for juggling two versions at once. Will fix in sixty seconds.

I'm taking that as a compliment!

Actually was inspired by Francis Bacon.

Ah still.
keep on the good job, looking great so far.
wouldn't hurt to mix and match creatures designs
if it's Francis Bacon, Trevor Henderson or even Masahiro Ito.

I know those artist are the good examples to create nightmarish beings.

You know how his pictures can be less scary?
seeing those videos on youtube videos
that show his drawings/photos,
while unfitting, campy or uplifting music is playing in the background. :D

I was thinking about Manhunt's OST in this, soon enough as I watched the video, it was being used already.
