Getting monsters to group up in ZScript?

Basically, I'm trying to get a certain type of monster to group up with one another in ZScript. The issue is that I'm not very good at ZScript. As best as I can tell, what I need to do is have a monster check how far it is from its nearest ally, and if it's too far, set that ally as a movement goal, and move towards it. Is this even possible? I feel like it should be.

It is possible to create teams (or 'mobs') of monsters, but the scripting is not trivial; my version (the 'mobbing' code in the cats of doom) works by having all a team gang up on a target whenever one acquires a new target, until that new target is dead. You are welcome to have a look at that code; this mod is on hold due to a movement bug that will take me ages to track down and RL simply isn't giving me enough time to spend on it :(
