How do I make music and texture replacement mods?

Post by Jareth247 »

I recently found a steampunk-themed map pack (can't remember the name, but it's part of the Doomer Project Board series) and I'd love to throw in a music replacement mod, naturally with tracks from bands like Abney Park and Vernian Project.

I also have a few other ideas for music replacement mods, usually based around mod loadouts based around a particular theme.

Another thing I'd like to do is make texture replacement mods. For example, I'd LOVE to create an American McGee's Alice-themed texture mod to turn vanilla Doom into something a better fit for the Alice: Toys of Madness gameplay mod. Other than that, I've seen a bunch of textures on Realm667 that I'd love to use as texture replacement mods, but I can't do so by loading the WADs I download from them as-is into my ZDL loadout.

There is potentially a lot to explain but, IMO, the easiest thing to do might be to find a mod that does the same kind of thing as you want to do and pull it apart to see how it was done.

It's also worth looking into how to structure a PK3 file. That's probably the easiest way of structuring a project for GZDoom, rather than working with the older, quirky and somewhat arcane WAD format.

With the music replacement mods, I was thinking of doing something like one of those many, many, MANY randomizers where it'll basically play a random song when a level loads up and there's the option to skip tracks.

Are all these based on a singular mod or would I need to basically gut one of these mods and replace all the tracks with the ones I'm providing?

Aside from the aforementioned steampunk music mod (with the likes of Abney Park and Vernian Process), I'm looking to create a fantasy-themed metal mod. Basically a mélange of Chastain, Angel Witch, Warlock, Helloween and pretty much anything a D&D fan would listen to in the '80s/'90s.

EDIT: I cannibalized a pre-existing music replacement mod that I found with a DoomRPG Rebalance download (can't remember where I got it, though it was probably here), edited the "LANGUAGE.txt" file (God, that took FOREVER!), used Bulk Rename Utility to rename every track (currently, there's only 84 tracks, though I pared that down from about 100, give or take), used them to replace the music in the mod and saved it as "Retro Fantasy Metal Music Replacement.pk3".

For obvious reasons, I won't be uploading it. I can, however, just list all the songs I put on it. It's got some Helloween (from the Keeper of the Seven Keys duology), Grim Reaper, Warlock, Chastain and Angel Witch.
