The LightMode suggestions

Post by Sinael »

There have been a few people (myself included), who very much disliked the change to the availability of the lightmodes, and confused about the naming of ones that remained since they are so non-descriptive.
The way to make things better and less confusing would be to rename the current non-descriptive modes, and bring back few of the most useful old ones.
So my suggestion is :
Rename "Vanilla" to "Shader - DOS",
Rename "Software" to "Shader - ZDoom",
Rename "Classic" to "Non-shader",
And to add "Dark", "Standard", and "Bright" back, but rename them as "Non-shader Dark", "GZDoom Original", and "GZDoom Bright".

The "Non-shader Dark" is useful to quite a few people who would prefer to play without the bright spot around the player - every now and then I see people ask about how to remove it, which is not possible in the remaining lightmodes unluess you would also remove the fog entirely.
The "GZDoom Original" is useful for older GZDoom-specific maps that are highly unlikely to ever be updated with the proper MAPINFO setting, and whenever a player wants a brighter but not too bright game without the meddling with the gamma/brightness/contrast setting that invariably washes out and distorts the colors.
"GZDoom Bright" on the other hand is very useful on mobile devices where native brightness settings are rather limited, and built-in gamma/brightness/contrast settings outright don't work

Also to add a switch below the setting to "Prefer MAPINFO setting". One might argue against "runining author's vision" that this otion allows, but if player dislikes that vision for whatever reason they should be able to alter it to their liking and accept the consequenses of it not looking the intended way.
