Honestly I feel like it should be left to the mapper's responsibility to set the light mode. If they fail to do that, it's their fault, and the option should be restored.neoworm wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:19 pm Oh, so this is the reason why GZDooM suddenly looks like crap. Sorry, but when you need a "legacy" option to be enabled for maps not to look like shit than the non legacy options are just bad.
I was just on a hour long binge searching for what changed in the engine and why my map looks terrible now, I even made a post about it here: viewtopic.php?t=79035
If your default settings can make mess like this randomly in the map:
Then you made a blunder. This needs to return.

Problem is, you can't currently set it up yourself without console commands that RESET to default when you stop playing and you can't add the MAPINFO for enforcing some sensible sector light mode to all those maps that were released during the years. Not to mention that wiki doesn't even have example of how to actually apply the GL renderer option through MAPINFO, no name of the definition block, or where else to add it.Major Cooke wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 12:53 pm Honestly I feel like it should be left to the mapper's responsibility to set the light mode. I was playing with the three sector light modes that are currently accessible in options and all three looks like crap when you work with very dark sectors, gradient sector lights or on the edges of dark and light areas.
All three use lightening around player - which, I know, is how the original DooM behaved, but it looks like crap with dynamic light and makes that horrible looking banding that I showed on the screenshot (This should probably by it's own option anyway.). And all except the Classic (faster) just blows up all the dark areas if you have gamma even slightly above 1.00. Long time ago I set the sector light mode to DooM and I never had problem with any wad I was playing till now when it defaulted to something else and the contranst was immediately apparent.
Simply this option needs to return, it needs to stay accessible and it has to be persistent.

As much as I thought the light option was necessary and why it was removed was a weird reason, this topic has been done to death and I feel you're not arguing in good faith. I sense some hostility as well.
There's a testing CVAR for testing light modes on I believe. Otherwise I think it's moot to try to change Graf's mind on this.

Yeah, there is a bit of hostility, because a fully functional feature was removed, made the whole engine look worse and I spent two hours searching for answer why the map looks like my graphics card is dying only to find that the answer is works as intended.
GZDooM have hundreds of obsolete compatibility options all over but the one that actually could visibly improve the visuals is removed. Not even removed, just hidden. Why can't this stay as another option like it was instead of being moved to esoteric MAPINFO compat option that is not even properly documented?

Let's make it short:
The option was demoted to a mapping option because general feedback told us that many mappers didn't appreciate having to adapt their mapping to users 'screwing up their map design'.
The feature is still there but now it's in a form that causes far less problems to the vast majority of users
