Put "Doom Legacy" Back In Sector Light Mode

Post by romerofan0162 »

If you could please put "Doom Legacy" back in the Sector Light Mode (or even call it "Bright" to avoid confusion), it would be much appreciated. Some maps look too dark without it. Again, a lot of folks are missing it, too. If this could be implemented in the next update, it would surely help. Thanks...

No, we do not plan this.

Oh, well, OK, that's fine. May I ask why? It was a nifty feature, you know...

As I understand it the feature as a whole was causing confusion with map design, to the point where people playing darker maps would think they are brighter than they actually are - and that also the names in the menu for all those lightmodes was too confusing.

I am of the opinion that if you want to play a dark map as a bright one, hey, it's a free source port, do what you want - but still, it is ultimately a cheat, so having it as a temporary override does seem like a more sensible solution than removing it entirely or leaving it the way it was.

Oh, OK. Thanks for letting me know, Rachel. It's a bit of a bummer. I know a lot liked the feature (myself included), but at least I can enable it with the Light Sector mod that guy posted. I'll see if I can also do it in the video settings options, too (gamma correction, brightness, etc). Thanks, again...

A developer blog post should've been made about this, to be honest, since it's kind of an unexpected big change.

Yeah, it should have. I tried adjusting the "Display Options," such as gamma corrections, brightness, saturation, and so forth (as recommended by the development team) and I have to say it is not even close to being a viable alternative to the missing sector lights. The old sector lights (such as "Legacy Doom") made it clear and visible without affecting the picture quality of the game (aside from some bright graphic models). It's a darn shame. It would be nice if we had a "sector brightness" slider option in the "Display Options" (along there with gamma corrections, brightness, saturation, etc).

Is there a slight possibility of maybe getting that feature in a future update? It would help considerably...

I made an addon that lets people restore it, but in its own menu at the bottom of Options. Just keep in mind, it will reset whenever the game is launched again to inactive.

That wasn't going to work to begin with when they're already putting it in autoconfig.

And like I said in the addon description, it's not meant to be used constantly - more of a debug tool so people can compare/contrast the different styles for setting the type. Since the cvar doesn't save, I figured that was better than the autoexec method.

When you get people adding it to the autoexec, you know people are still going to play against the changes no matter what.

You are probably right. What we really need is a submenu for items that mappers can use to tweak their maps - but then hide it behind the developer CVAR so that they'd get forced to enable that setting, which for mapping should always be on.

I'd still not worry too much about the handful op people who complain. I'm quite certain that it's a setting that 99% of the users never touch.

Although it may seem like sabotaging, I really don't think offering solutions like autoexec or a mod to the few people that care enough is actually that bad. The vast majority aren't going to seek it out, so the result is still going to be more people running with correct settings as it takes effort to set things wrong.

Ultimately I do agree that this is an xkcd 1172 situation.

I'd say put it in experimental options. That'd be the best place to go.

Or just a "cheat" or "developer" menu. I think Graf has the right idea, locking these things behind a hidden menu gives a very clear divide with what you should expect players who want to play your map "legit" can do and what tools you have available to assist you with development of your map/mod.

Oh, so this is the reason why GZDooM suddenly looks like crap. Sorry, but when you need a "legacy" option to be enabled for maps not to look like shit than the non legacy options are just bad.

I was just on a hour long binge searching for what changed in the engine and why my map looks terrible now, I even made a post about it here: viewtopic.php?t=79035

If your default settings can make mess like this randomly in the map:

Then you made a blunder. This needs to return.
