Contrary to popular belief, we are not all-knowing-all-seeing magical beings!

If you want help you're going to have to provide lots of info. Like what is your hardware, what is your operating system, what version of GZDoom/LZDoom/whatever you're using, what mods you're loading, how you're loading it, what you've already tried for fixing the problem, and anything else that is even remotely relevant to the problem.

We can't magically figure out what it is if you're going to be vague, and if we feel like you're just wasting our time with guessing games we will act like that's what you're really doing and won't help you.

Mac mini M1 GZDoom won't open

Post by RetroBox »

Hi, I'm relatively new to GZDoom but I had gotten it to work and was able to play some Doom 1 successfully, however, frustratingly the application will no longer open and gives me an error message (the attachment is the error).
I have tried redownloading the app a few times but nothing seems to work! I really want to play Doom and this is my only way of doing so as my Mac can't run apps that are not 64-bit.
If there is anything else I need to provide to help you understand what is happening, I will do my best to provide it.

An explanation of what i am doing is as follows:
I click on the app
it bounces symbolising that it is opening
then it stops, closes and gives me an apple crash popup

so because it doesnt work i try downloading a new version from zdoom.org which doesnt work and now i am just confused because it worked extremely well before so i can only think that the only option is to reset the app by deleting all the files it has made, the problem is i dont know where they are stored if there even is any

Can you post the contents of the startup log? It may give a hint at something going wrong at startup.
You could also try deleting your config and restart.

Do 'Go to Folder' in Finder (Shift+Cmd+G), enter ~/Library/Preferences, and press Return. Move gzdoom.ini file out of this folder, e.g. to Desktop.
This allows to start without any user settings. It would be nice if you attach this file to the topic as well.

According to the provided crash log, you are running Sonoma 4.0 Developer Beta 3 update / Public Beta 1, macOS 14.0 (23A5286i).
We cannot provide any support for preview software, especially for an outdated version of it.

If that is the case (You were going to reset your computer) then why are you reporting a issue that very well might get fixed by doing said reset?

If possible update to latest Mac and see what happens.

I’ll try updating but i just don’t get why it broke in the first place, as it could very well happen again.
i am currently waiting till i can actually reset my computer to see if its still an issue

I added safeguards against the crash in ae2fa11. The reason of such significant change in behavior is still a mystery to me.
