Advent 7111 CMOS Battery?

Post by Enjay »

A bit of a wild card, but there are people here who know old hardware sooo... :D

I have an old Advent 7111 laptop that I have just for playing music and not much else. It works fine for what I need it for, except for the fact that when I switch it on, it thinks it's July 2005. Normally I would assume the CMOS battery needs replacing but I've popped the back off and I don't see any battery.

Anyone know if this model of laptop had a CMOS battery, instead of maybe doing something odd like using the main laptop battery to store its settings? If it does have a CMOS battery, any idea how to find and change it?

I have done a bit of googling and haven't found an answer. All I found was someone asking the same question but not getting an answer.

Thanks.

Can you see all the usual PC components on the motherboard? CPU, RAM and what not? I found an image of an Advent 7113 laptop that has a CMOS battery near the... I suppose that would be the South Bridge.

With laptops, the CMOS battery isn't necessarily going to be an easily removed coin cell battery; very frequently they tend to be wrapped in an enclosure and connected to the terminal with a pair of wires in a plastic connector. You can still wiggle it loose, but you might need to special order your replacement.

https://images.esellerpro.com/2131/I/15 ... M_0419.JPG I do not know for sure that this is the same motherboard as in your machine, but it would look like they have the battery connected on the "underside" of the board, opposite of the side that you'd see the CPU on. Depending on the laptop, that side might not be facing upwards, as some tend to mount the board upside down to save room.

Indeed, Google concurs. The connector looks fairly standard, so there might be an easier to get and more generic replacement in the UK without having to spend a fortune importing from the US; this looks about right.

We get this at work a lot on older machines, not just a CR2032 in a plastic shield, but even strings of smaller cells than that :( And don't get me started on my AlphaServer that required a genuine Dallas 1287 and would not work with any of the modern so-called compatibles >:(

Ah, OK, that all helps. I *thought* i could see all the important bits when opening the case, but if the battery is connected to the underside of the MoBo, then I wouldn't have seen it. I'll have to investigate further to see how easy it is to get access to that side of the board. The "top" side was easy to access because it was just half a dozen screws to remove a plastic panel that let me see the MoBo. The other side will require much more extensive dismantling.

Thank you.
