Music for Dooming
Greetings, all! Hope your day's well.
I'm casually wondering.. what music do you like with your Doom? Does it depend on the Mod/are you looking for Mod-specific immersion? Do you prefer Strict Vanilla? Drone Ambiance? Death metal? No music at all?
What about when you're trying to create stuff/working hard on a project? Does music inspire you, or just distract you?
I'm rather interested to see people's music tastes. For me, lately, I've been listening to a lot of Drone Ambiance of the Creepy/End-of-the-World vibe stuff while I've been working. I've a few suggestions of YT channels with what I think are good tracks, if anyone wants to check them out.

Re: Music for Dooming
I personally lean into the idea of playing DooM as a power fantasy, and the original soundtrack already features a rather metal-heavy soundtrack. I like to really play that to the hilt, with an aggressively metal soundtrack, especially power metal and similar related genres.

Ooo.. interesting. So, if a Mod you're playing has goofy music, you'd prefer to disable it and play your own track selection instead?

That said, if it's not power metal to rip and tear to, I'd most likely opt for powerful orchestral music, like the soundtracks of the Medal of Honor franchise or Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.
Or I could just split the difference and go with symphonic metal like Hydro Thunder.

Depends entirely on the situation! I haven't been doing a lot of creative endeavors in Doom lately (which hopefully will change soon when other projects begin to taper off), but when I am working, I tend to go for either Synthwave/Outrun/Vaporwave/etc., preferably with no lyrics, because they tend to keep the serotonin flowing and lyrics tend to distract me. In-game, I usually listen to the music provided with the wad I'm playing, unless I'm straight-up just playing the retail levels, in which case I might use a jukebox mod or the covers from the 3D0 soundtrack, because they are fantastic and still feel like the intended experience. The only exceptions are if the provided music truly is unlistenable, or if it's the default level music, in which case I might opt for something instrumental (often instrumental power/symphonic metal) in the background.

Thrash metal for medieval maps, AOR and some metalcore for urban maps, gothic/symphonic metal for hell maps, trance for space-themed maps (mostly for Duke Nukem 3D though), prog metal for abstract maps, power metal and j-rock for nature-themed maps, pop-punk for country-themed maps.

Yeah, Medal of Honor - the oldest PSX/PS2 ones are the ones I'm most familiar with - had a fantastic, powerful soundtrack. One of my favorites is Attack on Fort Schmerzen from the original.openroadracer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 8:45 amDefinitely.DeadHeartProductions wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 8:07 amOoo.. interesting. That's a VERY diverse list.. oo. Now, I've heard the term "Prog Metal" used before, but could I ask for some examples? Specific songs you think really sell the genre. I'm a musical omnivore, I'll give anything a shot.axredneck wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 10:50 am Thrash metal for medieval maps, AOR and some metalcore for urban maps, gothic/symphonic metal for hell maps, trance for space-themed maps (mostly for Duke Nukem 3D though), prog metal for abstract maps, power metal and j-rock for nature-themed maps, pop-punk for country-themed maps.
So, default if it fits. I see, I see. I'll have to track down the 3DO covers - despite having played Doom since it came out, I never played or heard the tracks from the 3DO version.Scripten wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 9:25 am Depends entirely on the situation! The 3D0 port itself isn't great, but the covers they included did a good job of adding harmonies and flourishes without quite remixing the songs wholesale.

Re: Music for Dooming
It depends on what mods I'm using and what I'm in the mood for (mood also determines what mod I'm in the mood for
). I typically listen to dark ambient when I'm playing more survival horror-like mods like Nightmare Logic or Protocol Disposable. For mods that lean more towards power fantasy (especially when using Gun Bonsai), a variety of metal, hard rock, dark synth, and sometimes a little witch house.

Yeah, I've played MoH: Frontline and European Assault from the PS2, and MoH: Airborne on the X360. All had great soundtracks.DeadHeartProductions wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 11:16 amYeah, Medal of Honor - the oldest PSX/PS2 ones are the ones I'm most familiar with - had a fantastic, powerful soundtrack. But you really ought to give Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction a listen. It's just as good.

Oooo.. THIS stuff. Randomly searching the YouTubes for music, I've come across things in a similar vein. I had no idea it was called "Prog," though. Ha. Well, this old man lost track of what-gets-called-what around the Grunge era. This stuff really bops. Thank you.axredneck wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 11:25 amIt's "that strange metal like jazz but metal"DeadHeartProductions wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 11:16 amNow, I've heard the term "Prog Metal" used before, but could I ask for some examples? Appreciate it.
Earth's Last Echoes has some really good Ambiance music. I can also recommend Dusk Shroud, Soundscapes & Ambiance, and Spiritual City Music, if you haven't discovered them yet.Nems wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 1:36 pm It depends on what mods I'm using and what I'm in the mood for (mood also determines what mod I'm in the mood for). I believe I played that, years ago. If it's the game I'm thinking of - and it seems to be - my late wife and I logged tons of hours on it while her PS2 still worked. But you really ought to give Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction a listen. It's just as good.

Re: Music for Dooming
There was one mission where you were working for an ex-KGB guy, taking out a group of guys that were hiding the guy he used to work for that betrayed you and him in the prior mission. There was a one-of-a-kind helicopter in that mission: a Kamov Ka-50 "Black Shark", NATO reporting name "Hokum-A".DeadHeartProductions wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2023 2:06 pmI believe I played that, years ago. It was the most nimble helicopter gunship in the game, though not quite as well armed as the renamed Apache gunship.

One combo that I'm a bit of a fan of is playing Doom with jazz, especially with a wad like Crumpets.
It's definitely a mood.
