Which Doom source port developers would you hire for a job?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Same thing as always, entrenched folks who have probably poured blood, sweat, and tears into the old ways, regardless of if they're still relevant or not. I know that there's been a lot of resistance to refactoring/replacing X, because everything is written to expect the graphical subsystem to work a certain way, and it feels like killing off the old guard simply to sate the pride and ego of the new guys on the block. EVen though X has been aging since some time in the late eighties, I think, and it's probably high time for a revamp to something more modern.

It's kinda like you and videogames, Graf :D #allingoodfun

True, and I'm sure there's plenty of Linux devs who don't mind modernization, plus many others who actively champion it. Otherwise, such a movement would be dead in the water instead of gaining steam. Some like yourself may not care for it but are content to live-and-let-live. The rest, the dissenters, the complainers and flamers, are the ones that get heard the loudest. It's sad, and kinda puts a damper on anyone looking in from the outside. I guess all I'm saying is try not to let the bastards get you down, y'know?

No, but you have been extremely outspoken about it several times...

For what it's worth, I kinda see Graf as more "Darn kids get off my lawn >:( " and less "DIE IN A FIRE, SCUM  "

Eh, I always saw him as a bit of both but now I'm seeing him as the former more and more lately.

I wish someone would make a modern game with good gameplay for once just to convince Graf that not everything modern is bad, I mean sure I hate most modern games too but they're not all as bad as he says they are! :P

I think it's more than just the gameplay. It's also everything around modern gaming: DLC, DRM, politics, etc. Things were just simpler 10, 15 years ago.

Besides, gameplay is hugely subjective. I think Project Reality (BF2 mod) has some of the best, most satisfying, "modern military" combat out there, by a long shot. It's definitely not for everyone, though. Most folks here would probably peg it as boring and overly complex.

QFT; I can think of a few more-recent games that I wouldn't be wholly uninterested in, but refuse to touch because of external bullshit that's attached.

I like Hideous Destructor and ARMA. And Insurgency. I think I may enjoy pain a little bit too much...

Also, amen to the external bits around modern gaming.

Payday 2? Enjoyable crime sim up for me up until Overkill Software started trying to sell crowdfunding as DLC.

Overgrowth? Starbound? Countless others? Stuck in Early Access Limbo. And that's not even including the flat-out scams, as opposed to in-progress games made by well-meaning but ultimately inexperienced indie developers.

Steam Greenlight? It was meant as a ship for indie refugees, now it's a haven for scammers and trolls.

Skyrim? ...Well, I don't need to say what happened THERE, do I?

Mass Effect Trilogy? Act 3 had shitty DLC practices and a shaky plotline that was an awkward continuation of the first two games by a highly different team.

Team Fortress? Once was a challenging class-based FPS, now it's a fountain of in-jokes and in-game economy crap I can't be arsed to understand.

Counter-Strike? Used to love Global Offensive up until some esports-related betting scandals hit the scene, at which point I concluded it wasn't about having fun anymore.

Half-Life 3? Forever vaporware because Valve is too busy trying out shit like paid modding.

Metal Gear Solid? Konami apparently wants to either kill it or raise it as a zombie. Or someone at Konami just has a grudge against Kojima.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Steam players of it got their soundtracks hit by a patch due to licensing issues.

Postal 2? Once a guilty pleasure of mine, I uninstalled it and never looked back after they put in a Milos Whateverhisnameis NPC in the new Paradise Lost DLC as blatant pandering to Gamergaters.

There's still some gems out there and some developers that actually both act professional and enjoy their work, but I think they're the exception to the rule. They just carve out their niche and try to make their customers in that niche happy.

Link? I never heard of this.
Starbound? [...] Stuck in Early Access Limbo. And that's not even including the flat-out scams, as opposed to in-progress games made by well-meaning but ultimately inexperienced indie developers.
Huge update occurred for Starbound fairly recently that overhauled and rebalanced almost everything. The game feels a ton better as a result.
Steam Greenlight? It was meant as a ship for indie refugees, now it's a haven for scammers and trolls.
Every now and then something good does come out. Wrack itself is slowly making its own way, and Starmade looks promising, too. It like Starbound is plagued with a slow development cycle but it's getting there.
You need to look for the diamonds in the rough when it comes to Greenlight.
Counter-Strike? Used to love Global Offensive up until some esports-related betting scandals hit the scene, at which point I concluded it wasn't about having fun anymore.
All the gambling stuff got banned by Valve. They wanted none of that shit in CSGO. This includes some of the highest ranking teams throwing the game for that money.
Half-Life 3? Forever vaporware because Valve is too busy trying out shit like paid modding.
Steam devs =/= Game devs. The team has to be working on something, and I think I recall something about how they were fiddling around with a new Source engine.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Steam players of it got their soundtracks hit by a patch due to licensing issues.
That's not Rockstar's fault.

For the past several months, you have come across as an increasingly aggressive and angry user here on the forums, who seems to be pissed off and judgmental about virtually everything that comes past your eyes, and it's starting to irritate me. Is there something else going on in your life?

Here:

http://www.reddit.com/r/paydaytheheist/ ... l_and_the/

The Completely Overkill pack was a pre-orderable DLC that was intended as a "thank you" to Overkill for fans who wanted to financially support them. Given that purchases of it went towards the Hype Train event (where various rewards were unlocked as freebies the more money fans spent on DLC), I maintain that it was in essence crowdfunding.

Good. Very good, then. My hats off to Starbound's devs for clearing a hurdle.

Yeah, I figure that. What do we do with the obvious crapjobs like Bloodbath Kavkaz, though? Just let them sit there?

GOOD. Competitive games are harsh enough with internet issues, metagame balance changes and other problems without external factors spoiling the milk.
Half-Life 3? Forever vaporware because Valve is too busy trying out shit like paid modding.
Steam devs =/= Game devs. The team has to be working on something, and I think I recall something about how they were fiddling around with a new Source engine.
Yay, I think. I got a bit too incensed here---the paid mods thing put a bad taste in my mouth and I'm a bit pissier than is probably necessary with Valve right now.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Steam players of it got their soundtracks hit by a patch due to licensing issues.
That's not Rockstar's fault.
Didn't mean to say it was, just wanted to say such things happening make me paranoid about the rest of my library.

I know I was rude to Hellsmith in one thread and rude to a spammy poster in another thread, but where do you get off making those kinds of accusations and asking that personal a question without even citing any examples of my behavior, and when we're relative strangers at best? I found that rude in its own way. Furthermore, your accusations aren't HELPFUL to me if you can't at least give some examples.

If you had just asked me to cool off a little, that would have been one thing. But you're making this personal without giving a reason why beyond "your behavior irritates me".

Indeed. It was mostly DRM that killed it for me.
The last 'new' game I played was Quake 4, after that it became impossible to rent games at my local video store and I'm just not willing to spend €50-60 on a game sight unseen.
In addition, I found many games I rented before Valve destroyed PC gaming forever highly unsatisfying.

That said, I wouldn't be entirely uninterested buying some older stuff, but again it's mostly Steam that turns me off as they have a bad tendency to force localized versions upon non-English speaking customers, especially in Germany where ratings are binding by law, so they just won't offer versions of a game that were not rated. I'm stuck with what the makers decided to sell here, and those versions are mostly crap with shitty localization and often censored to get a 16 rating. No, thank you.

ITT: Modern games with good gameplay discussed without even mentioning Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, or Bloodborne once.

Also, TF2 is still quite good for competitive players. Avoid the casuls, find a server where clan players relax on, and enjoy the skill on display. I regularly dominate using the stock rocket launcher on soldier.
