I only had Quake 2 on the N64 growing up but I actually really enjoyed it. Looking back on it, it's fairly low res and muddy compared to the PC version but at least it had pretty good lighting.

Quake2 for N64 was fun in it's own right though it proves that FPS games should never be played with a controller.

probably because that was the way the ambient on that planet is mean to be?? after all the sky is always orange, no idea if people wanna be always earth sky on other planets

Stroggos on Quake 4 is still orange, however Raven at least combined perfectly the theme shades that the game have, the gray/brown/blue inside the bases against the orange in the outside.

Again, Splash Damage did the same on Quake Wars, but the only problem of ET:QW it is not being the best prequel for Quake 2.

True, PC's are always going to be better for that but at least they work in a pinch if you can't afford a good computer and happen to already own the console.

In fairness, the sky color isn't going to determine the ambient light color. If it did, then the outside environments on Earth would be blue, it's only blue because of the way the light is diffused through it. In actuality, the light comes from the sun so, unless the Quake 2's sun is a super nova or something, it shouldn't realistically have such an orange glow unless it's fog. :wink:

As far as the FPS on console, I honestly think Perfect Dark did just fine in that regard. Turok Rage Wars was plenty playable, as was Quake 2, so it wasn't just Rare being awesome. Oh, and Hexen. Hexen is a game I'd pick up again for N64.

Hexen on the N64 was an infuriating experience even moreso than the PC version, I'm surprised you didn't even mention Doom 64 or Timesplitters.

Doom 64 and Doom SNES made me think that, in a way, they put more effort towards Nintendo consoles than others as it related to Doom. While Doom for SNES was much less impressive on a technical level, it seemed like they tried to make it closer to the PC version in design rather than just copying the Jaguar version like with the other consoles and it even had the boss monsters in it. Then you've got Doom 64, the only one of the three consoles to get a completely unique Doom.

the fact that Doom 64 has autoaiming makes it a lot less of a hassle to actually play it as opposed to, say, Quake on the N64. how the fuck am i supposed to play either game and expect to be able to AIM at anything ever?

It's not easy, but I found that if I move with the analog and then look up and down with the stick and then strafe with the c buttons I can make it work. But is it ever convoluted.

i think it could have benefitted a lot from having auto-aim, honestly. i mean yeah, that's not in the original game, but did the developers really think it'd be easy to play the game on the N64?

Part of the problem with N64 FPSes is that any dev who was working on them was going to be fighting an uphill battle trying to make decent controls with the N64's oddly-shaped trident controller. Rareware was unusual for making games as playable as Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on that platform.

I think console FPSes for dualstick-controller platforms are at least worthy competitors to PC FPSes, if not quite as good. Doesn't help that the PC and console core audiences tend to want two different things by my experience---PC players want a mix of tactical or tactical-ish shooters and oldschool arena shooters, console fans tend to want CoD/Battlefield/whatever.

ARMA would never work well on consoles, though. Too many buttons. And while Insurgency might work on consoles the devs oddly seem perfectly content to remain on Steam. No problems with that here, it's a good game no matter which platform it's on.

tl;dr: Console FPSes are not inherently bad, just bad console FPSes. That much said, they have to work with way more constraints than PC FPSes. I for one tend to play a lot of my non-DooM FPSes on PC using an old XB360 controller.

This game is a good example of a great but very overlooked console FPS.

Quake I: Never played it, looks cool with it's atmosphere style and soundtrack, and appreciate it being it's own thing, but the monsters look horrible.

Quake II: Great Single-Player experience, satisfying combat, found it a little impossible at times looking back and forth for hours searching for a key or switch, each time the screen loading for ten seconds every ten steps.. also found the later game very hard with not much ammo or health and insanely unfair enemies (the gladiator, who fires in 0.0001 of a second with 100% accuracy and takes 75% of your health off, or the spider enemy, which is a version of this with two of its weapons, nuff said..)
Vanilla multiplayer has lacklustre design, only DM possible, pretty much.
GREAT soundtrack.

Quake III: Great pick-up-and-play fun multiplayer experience playing offline anyway, with an easy learning curve, but never quite difficult enough. Actually liked the Vadrigar story and wouldn't mind a return, with this gameplay.

Quake IV: Know nothing. Always got the impression of a generic modern shooter. So not very good.

Quake Enemy Territory Wars: Played the demo for ten minutes, left.
