Do you guys always get that upset about a reasonably on topic joke that demonstrates knowledge of a current meme and reasonable knowledge of the subject matter of this thread? Seriously, it's mild humour. Very mild - and kind of funny.

Are you actually offended or just jumping on the "can't say something about a dude because he's dead" thing? If you wouldn't have been offended about the same joke before Nimoy died, it's fair game after he died too IMO.

And even if you are offended (or even would have been before his death) remember: just because you are offended, it doesn't mean you are right.

Second off:It seemed disrespectful because it looked more like an excuse to parrot the meme again and be 'hip' than to show some respect to Nimoy, whom the post barely mentioned. It had effectively nothing to do with Nimoy aside from dropping his name. And like I said, there's already a thread for that meme.

Third off: That third paragraph of yours comes across as majorly arrogant. Seriously, what the Hell was it supposed to accomplish besides trying to be clever and get in the last word, and why was it necessary?

Didn't Spock wear a golden uniform at some point? I think that's what DaMan was referencing to... but I'm not a huge Trekkie so don't quote me on that (I do know his usual uniform is blue and black!).

Anyway, yeah, sad news indeed... great man indeed. Some of his tweets were lovely, especially the ones where he encourages people to quit smoking, which as a non-smoker, I really appreciate. Live long and prosper!

Sorry if I was snappy, I haven't been in the best of moods lately and Nimoy's passing left me a bit melancholy.

Ummm... well, I quoted two people.

Aside from the fact that, as Spock, he usually wore a blue shirt with a black collar and, yes, he has also worn gold as far as I remember. I'd say it was right on the button for a topical joke related to the biggest current meme about a dress that looks blue and black some of the time and gold and white at other times.

As for the disrespect thing; I don't really get why it could be considered disrespectful at all. A bit off topic, perhaps (but only a bit) but disrespect? Really? Hence my other question: were you really offended? If so, why? The comment wasn't even slightly derogatory to Nimoy.

As for the third paragraph, I was quoting Ricky Gervais and also trying to allude to the more eloquently phrased version by Stephen Fry because they seemed slightly relevant to where I was going with my comments.

Anyway, we really are off topic now and I note your comment about you being "snappy" so there is certinaly no point in taking this to any kind of argument (not my intention anyway). It was just that I thought your and, even more so, Hellsmith1's attitude seemed unnecessarily touchy about a mild joke so I commented on it.

Back on topic: 83 year old actor dies after long and illustrious career. He had a pretty good innings and he did lots of stuff. You might say that he lived long and prospered. Despite doing other things, nearly everyone will remember him as Spock; the character that made him a household name. Even though I am a bit of a Star Trek fan, his death has minimal impact on me and I don't find it particularly sad either.

I honestly didn't know about Spock's alt gold-white uniform, so I only semi-got the joke and didn't realize it was more on-topic than I initially thought. Now that I know it's on-topic the entire context of the post has changed for me, so...Ignore my initial outburst. Complete misunderstanding. Carry on.

The original Star Trek was before my time (my folks raised me on TNG ) so I actually don't automatically think of him as Spock---although his performance in Wrath of Khan IS one of my favorites.

Indeed he did (I think maybe most of the crew did? and they were weird sweater-looking tops too) and his makeup made his eyebrows look a lot more pointy and his face a bit more alien/weird IMO.

This was the second pilot, wasn't it? "Where No Man Has Gone Before"? The first pilot had Christopher Pike, played by Jeffrey Hunter, as the captain of the Enterprise. "The Cage". That one got recycled into "The Menagerie".
