DooM better hellish levels?

Post by Naitguolf »

Good day :)

Please, anyone could list to me the most hellish levels out there? For hellish i mean levels with hell strong theme, enviroment that makes you think: This is indeed the hell, or a nightmare. I really liked the original Inferno episode they seems to resemble some kind of inferno really :) (but no doom2 hell themes i found them not as good)

Thanks :)

Scythe 2 had a really interesting Hell-ish level. I can't quite recall the level number or name though.

Demons Of Problematique 2 and Titan 2 are both really good Hell-themed sets.

It had five, maps 26-30.

Also check out Deus Vult 1 map02 through map04, Deus Vult 2 map21/map22, Hellcore 2 map11, and Scythe maps 21 through 30.

I'd also put in UAC Ultra, if you disregard the bases. At least in my opinion.

I saw those more as environments on a hellish planet rather than hell itself.

I suppose it's all down to interpretation at the end of the day because everyone has their own personal ideals. I imagine a good hell level would involve lots of flesh textures, cages, lava and general red textures. The closest to this for me was Icon of Sin from the normal Doom2.wad with the 32 levels although I'm guessing you've played most if not all of those levels. Apart from that all the mods I've played have been a mixture of hell and earth.

Some areas/maps in both Deus Vult wads, and generally alot of the classic megawads get hellish around the last third, classic storyline and all.

That's kinda what it was. It was the scorched remains of Mars, after it became a global battlefield between UAC and Hell.

That said I think Deus Vult and 32 Inch Nails has some sick hell themed maps.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks that hellish maps are, on the general, very ugly?

I especially find this to be the case on classic DooM levels. The thing is, hell just doesn't look good with DooM's boxy style. Fleshy textures and brimstone/fire sorts of things should look more organic and natural.

Now, I'm not saying that hell can't look good in DooM, but it should be more architecture-based and less natural, like CaptainToenail's post above mine. Nice screen! :)

Like what? I'm playing the IWAD levels now and hadn't come across anything that would be considered 'boxy' in doom, especially the hell themed levels.
