!!ATTENTION!! - Please Secure Your Passwords!

We sure do have a lot of rules and guidelines threads - find them all here, and please make sure you've read them! Also, community-wide announcements (that aren't major ZDoom News) go here as well.

it is a bit weird that this stuff was happening shortly after that guy was being a creep to coraline, complained in every thread about BD compat, and harassed 3dge creators

It was happening before, actually. We started getting the "too many login attempts" messages not long before "Extropist" started whining in the Hideous Destructor thread. The guy in the 3DGE thread was most likely the same guy, too.

Well, the fellow who hijacked my account, at any rate. Judging by that thread and the subsequent trolling, mine wasn't the only account that got hacked.

I don't visit the forums often, but as soon as I saw this I logged on and saw that someone tried to log in to my account several times until the CAPTCHA prompt.
Thanks for the warning, dude. Also, like suggested before, get a long, complicated or randomly generated password and secure it in a password vault like KeePass.

I changed my password too. Geez, this must be headache inducing for the moderators.

That's putting it lightly. At least I get to bust out my considerable lexicon of witty "see you later" messages, though. =P

Changed my password. I am not going to access my account from tomorrow until May 29th, so if anybody posts under my name till then, just assume I got hacked.

while we're having this discussion, i just want to state, for the record, that "being tricked into giving away your password" is not the same thing as "being hacked". if THAT happens, it's your own damn fault. :P

Went to look up the XKCD comic on Password Strength before realizing it was already linked. Very good!

Numbers and capital letters are highly overrated. Aside from some random sequence of characters, the best password is still some phrase that only has meaning to you. Such a password is impossible to guess and a brute force algorithm can only succeed if the website this is on has no means of protection against bogus login attempts. Most websites these days block further logins after a number of failed attempts so that brute-forcing the way in is not really possible unless the actual password is something really, really dumb.
