We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was "legal" and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was "illegal." It was "illegal" to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler's Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers. If today I lived in a Communist country where certain principles dear to the Christian faith are suppressed, I would openly advocate disobeying that country's antireligious laws.

Such is the dilemma of the Lawful Good; If you have been sworn to uphold the law, but the law is unjust, do you do the right thing or do you maintain your oaths? Cruel DMs love to pull that one to try and force a Paladin to fall.
(Personally, in such a situation, I'd advocate going Neutral Good over Lawful Neutral buuut that's just me)

I've always seen the paladin's purpose as as upholding the laws of their god. After all, if the evil sorcerer posts "no trespassing" signs on his property, does the paladin have to keep out?

True Neutral- A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. Now, here's an interesting point: what they did was legal in Germany's laws, at the time, but broke the laws of the Geneva Convention. What they did was still illegal, just not to more local laws.

Speaking of the falls of paladins, aside from "lawful" versus "good" issue, I've always thought there were some other interesting ethical debates for paladins in fantasy settings. The start of Arthas' fall in Warcraft 3's a great example. These civilians have contracted this plague that will turn them into zombies. They're dead already, but after they turn they could hurt some of our soldiers that we need to fight off the already-undead force outside the city. The solution: kill them before they turn undead...

Though you're not too far off, arguably; while Germany's actions during the war were still technically legal, they did ultimately influence Geneva into adding more protections.

I guess the moral of the story, in context of this thread, is that when determining what is and isn't lawful, you should really be thinking about whose laws you go by. Though even D&D's alignment matrix does not get as detailed as determining individual loyalties...because, remember, not everybody on Hitler's team necessarily followed Hitler. What came to be called "Operation Valkyrie" is a great example, even if the operation ultimately failed.
