Re: [REL] Kybok Rakov
Missing textures and HOM as part of the map design.
Well.
Well.

Re: [REL] Kybok Rakov
I been using limewire and uTorrent trying to download this wad.
Edit: Nevermind I got limewire to once again work, but I'm still not able to download the wad. Is there anybody that is willing to the wad up on a file hosting website?

Re: [REL] Kybok Rakov
Judging by the OP's attitude, it's most likely filled with 10 minute long .wav files of some sort of russian extremist playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - particulary the "No Russian" mission. The real question is this: Why are people downloading this, knowing full well what the end result is going to be?Kinsie wrote:Why is this mod over 350mb compressed.

ACTORS - 226kb
DOTA - 4.94kb
FLATS - 1.12mb
GRAPHICS - 8.64MB
MAPS - 33.8MB
MUSIC - 158MB
PATCHES - 10.4MB
SOUNDS - 92.4MB
SPRITES - 24.3MB
TEXTURES - 69.2MB
Also there's a hell a lot of GVH and ZDWars wads in there...
Re: [REL] Kybok Rakov
Sounds is just poor compression- they're probably WAV. Textures, either high res or a lot of them. 158MB is a decent amount of moderately compressed music.
In this day and age 350MB is small. AAA titles sit around 10-15GB, with some much larger (I'm looking at you, 30GB Ghosts). Even some indie titles are approaching the gigabyte mark now. A 15 minute YouTube video in 720p is 150-200MB IIRC, and a high-quality CD rip will be a few hundred meg. The Doom community seems to have (understandably) outdated explanations of file size.

Re: [REL] Kybok Rakov
Then you realize that the reason modern games are 15 GB is because they have really high-res textures, highly detailed models, way more sound effects and music, full voice acting, and a lot of stuff that Doom mods don't necessarily need. Your average Doom texture is probably one-eighth the resolution of your average Unreal Engine 3 texture (even accounting for the texture pop-in and console limitations that typically plague UE3 games).
I think it's awesome that we can have full-featured mods for Doom that are routinely 10% of the size of most modern games' downloadable demos.

Not sure what point you're trying to make here.wildweasel wrote:Then you realize that the reason modern games are 15 GB is because they have really high-res textures, highly detailed models, way more sound effects and music, full voice acting, and a lot of stuff that Doom mods don't necessarily need. If I recall correctly, Doom 2 has one track per level, for a total of 32 tracks. 32 high quality MP3 tracks encoded at 320Kbps is something like 300MB. Even a more reasonable bitrate (say 192 Kbps) will likely put your soundtrack alone at over a hundred megabytes. Sound effects are uncompressed- long ones should be compressed as OGG or FLAC or they'll get out of hand (Metro 2034 had one from L4D2 that was 10MB before compression).
Ascension Revolution contains most of Freedoom and Blasphemer's textures and it's only 5MB. However, if you increase the resolution by a factor of 2, you quadruple the size, something to keep in mind for high-res texture packs. The 3D skybox is over a meg as a PNG- compressed with JPEG it's a lot more reasonable. Sprites are only 3MB or so... that's surprisingly small too. Maps are surprisingly large- WORLD01 is about 2MB and it's not even finished yet (UDMF). However, that's a ridiculously large map. Stoner Doom's entire level set (modified Doom E1Mx) is smaller.
Audio is the big one here, and high res graphics might do it too if you pack enough of them in. A conventional mod will probably stay small, but if you're doing certain things it's going to get big fast. Of course, big is relative, because even Grezzo2 is pretty small comparatively speaking.
Oh, and those projects I mentioned? Forget about them, super top secret. But for the curious, Ascension Revolution sits at 30MB (okay, that one's not top secret), Stoner Doom (decraped version- long story) is 110MB, and Metro 2034 is 53MB (including Freedoom). But forget you ever heard those names. Except the first one, remember that one. Please?

"Please don't mention these things I wouldn't ever bring up if I didn't actually want them mentioned! Especially not in someone else's project thread! Nudge wink etc." Come on, man.XCVG wrote:Oh, and those projects I mentioned? Forget about them, super top secret.
