I *think* I'm handling the decorate stuff (usually what happens when Apothem and I get together) and I'm gathering resources for mapping, ie high res textures, sprites, ect. We have been thinking about making this for the GZDoom port, to take advantage of it's new features.

[EDIT]Confirmed for GZDoom.

Since I've never seen any of your work, I'd like to sample of your work. Please email it to me at

I need some equipment and weapon ideas. The more the merrier.

EDIT: If you're going to do any mapping, please send me a sample of your work so I can see if I could use you or not, I don't want you to say you're going to help and then either produce things I can't use or not help at all :-P

Ok, seeing as how you are going to develop camera system, and this will be turn based, I think it's important to take that into consideration.

I think of games like FF3 in terms of attacks and equipment. Have a mana system, represented by a meter. To start there can be elemental attacks:

Fire
Ice
Water
Lightning
Earth
Meteor
ect...

And I've got a lot of animations that could be used for those already. I think enventory items would work good to, potions, x-potions, tonics, elixirs, pheonix down ect to fullfill those types of needs.

First and foremost, I'm working on the test map for Apothem to develop his scripts around. Then after that is done, we can start tackling issues like mapping standards ect. I think it is best to get the scripting hammered out first, before mapping can be approached, and things like attacks/weapons can come along the way.

Sure, I'll lend a hand; I'll do something with this Town Map idea of yours if you want, and maybe something else if I feel like it, depending on what you need.

Kick ass. I'm getting rather excited about this project... I'll need to sleep on some of this tho, as my brain is still a little fried from when I tried to do the shielding system and then the vehicles with no break inbetween... So gimmie a few days to get my thoughts together and get everything organized so I can start coding again.

Well when you manage to get something for me to see, send it to me at my email address, and I'll take a look at it.

I was thinking that "Mana" could be spiritual currency. As you accumulate spiritual money, you can pay for the services of a kind of spirit, like say a fire spirit to burn your enimies. As you make connections and deals, you can convince more spirits to do cooler things.

I think Apothem is going for a traditional FF3 like feel to things, while your idea is interesting, but I don't think it would fit his scenario. For those interested in some of the grunt work, this mod will be for GZDoom, and feature all textures at a .5 ratio (meaning a 128x128 space would be filled with a 256x256 texture) from textures to flats(so flats would be 256x256 displayed at 128x128). And I don't want to hear about people whining that their old Tandy can't run it either! Anyway, if anybody wants to help at this stage of the development, they can by contributing high res gothic like gfx, for sure. It seems I'm officially in charge of gathering resources at this point, so until I develop a test map for Apothem to develop scripts with, nothing can actually be constructively done to progress the project. This map is important, because once it is done, it will provide a standard for all mappers who want to help.

So if you want to help, go to drdteam.org, download the latest build of GZDoom, and check the Documentation section of the forum if you are interested in mapping. I plan on using "3d floors" for doing most of the lighting effects, and using point lighting for all of the monster attakcs/light sources (ie fireballs, rocket, lamps ect). 3d floors rock, and you can simulate volumetric fog/clouds if done correctly. All scripting and decorate aspects will not change from ZDoom 96 however (as that is the current standard for GZDoom).

Thanks!

Hey! I'm on this project too. Even if I am the concept/story guy. Why have a FF3 ripoff with amazing scripting if we can have something cool and original with amazing scripting?

I'm just going from conversations we've had on the subject (from a long time ago). He want's a turn based system that sounded to me, similar to FF3. I don't think it will be limited to any one type of game, but from what I can tell, the magic system will fuction like an ammo gauge, more like your traditional rpg. I won't speak any further on the subject, but being lead-side-kick to the project, I don't know if "buying" souls through deals is where the project is heading.

[edit] But then again, all the talks I've had with him, have been strictly restricted to functional aspects of the game. So there is definately room to expand upon, as far as the story is concerned. I guess my two cents are reserved when it comes to "buying" souls through deals.

The only difference between my idea and a traditional mana system is the creep factor. It's all pressing a button and seeing the spell go off, but the creep factor is a little higher knowing you just sold seven souls into eternal torment to achive that fireball. Plus, we can give the various spirits and demons personalities, with some being easier to negoite contracts (read "learn spells") with than others.
