Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
Doom you only had 1 player to choose from or if you were playing the skulltag version of doom back in 2004 it think you would have more players to choose from but the mug shot , the sound, speeds always looks that same and acts the same when you are using a different player.
ROTT you had 5 players to choose from and they all had different abilities the sound, mug shot, and speeds were different. To me i thank that the ROTT characters are the best to use so far.
If there was a competition between the best game player which one would you choose. Doom guy or one of the ROTT characters?

Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
Well, when I'm asked about my opinion on ROTT vs Doom, the first thing that comes on my mind is:
Doom Engine >>> ROTT Engine.
When I was playing ROTT as a small kid, I just disliked that all levels were practically made up of "squares" (or in other words, the level geometry was strictly bound to a square grid). I got bored of playing this game, because the levels looked very similar to each other and were too much labyrinthine and I got very easily lost in them. Just exactly like Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny - I never liked and finished these games.
ROTT also did not fascinate me, like Doom, Heretic and Hexen did. Heretic was the first 3D game I played (I had it earlier than Doom). I was charmed with the medeival environment, magical weapons and impressive creatures I fought against. There were places which were easily recognizable with real places - a cemetery, a cathedral and so on. Doom was a horror&sci-fi game with monsters from the hell with neat artwork, and it was really great experience to play it. Compared to ROTT, it just had (IMO) generic textures, generic levels (I could not name a place where I were) and... generic enemies. Nothing to impress me.
But now let's calm down. The game isn't that bad and is fun to play (at least for other people here). Despite the engine being very limited, it has some features which Doom doesn't have. Mostly I mean the physics, flying and moving platforms, traps, moving walls, variety of explosive weapons and crazy powerups, like god mode, dog mode, elasto mode etc. In conclusion, ROTT in much rather an arcade game. Not so serious like Doom, but focused more on crazy and fun gameplay.
I also liked the music from ROTT. It was very melodic. I liked the Adlib/Sound Blaster version of the music (not General MIDI) and once I recorded most tracks on an audio casette and listened to it.

Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
Rise of the triad is a fun game that suffered a huge case of "oblesance on launch" It came out around the same time as doom came out. Rise of the traid is a good looking game, but doom looked 3 times as good. ROTT has really good polished gameplay, which lended itself to a great arcadey feel, and it had several more multiplayer modes than doom. But a ROTT level is just not as graphically impressive as a doom level with the varied floor heights, moving platforms doors, animated wall textures, stairs. ROTT was released about 6 months too late to not be crushed by doom
Also i would choose doomguy, he wins by an "unf insinuating a vast dissertation on the perfection of the mechanics in his games"

Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
ROTT came out after Doom AND Doom II. If something came the same time, it's the registered ROTT against the full Dark Forces.
Also the "less graphic's" were totally welcome in a world full of 486s with the majority being on the ISA bus. While there's plenty that could play Doom and Doom II, there were a lot more that couldn't at an enjoyable framerate. Pentiums were still a relatively unobtanium luxury item and 486 DX4s were finally starting to creep up into the 3-digit MHz as an affordable P60 alternative.
This was a similar case when Duke3D came out. 486 enthusiast holdovers were still a thing in 1996.

Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
If you were making a brand new custom made level and you wanted to put or add some music to your level what would you want to listen to Doom music or Rise of the Triad music?

Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
I feel the gameplay of Rise of the Triad is absolutely superior to Doom's. However, the intense, ugly pinks and purples in Rise of the Triad really detract from the visuals and it doesn't help that it's a Wolfenstein 3D engine game.
I would listen to "You Take the Stairs" or "Suck This!" over "At Doom's Gate" any day.

I like the palette. It gives the game its own character. Not so easily achieved in the sea of orthogonal FPS games at the time.
Agreed with your music choices. They are bona fide classics.

What the fuck dude? ROTT fucking sucks (even the simplistic Wolfenstein 3D is much better).darkhaven3 wrote:I feel the gameplay of Rise of the Triad is absolutely superior to Doom's.
And the bullet weapons in this game are more useless then water guns.
The OST though, that's something. Shame it was wasted on that game.
Re: Doom VS Rise of the Triad
ROTT needs a decent source port. The original dos versions of Doom are barely playable to me compared to G/ZDoom. If ROTT gets a decent SP I am certain that people will grow to like it a lot more.

Sooner or later. Hopefully.NeuralStunner wrote:It's on the roadmap for full support. Quite distant as a goal, but it's there.Dark-Assassin wrote:Hmm, I actually wonder if ROTT could be ported to something like ECWolf

WinROTT and WinROTTGL aren't the best, but they are basically your only option.

You can have whatever opinion you want, I can't force people to be right.darkhaven3 wrote:Yeah ok, sureLkMax wrote:My opinion is better than yours

But seriously, to say ROTT is better then Doom is objectively wrong.
