I mean engine just create power, while gearbox transform these noble arabian horses to speed/torque.
But, while a transmission technically transfers the energy to the wheels and makes it move forward or backwards, the torque starts with the engine. That is the twisting force.
But yes, gearing can make a lot difference in performance. Although I have an aftermarket rear-end gear that is a little more aggressive than stock, I have a woman's transmission (Automatic 4) which has less gear ratio play than the manual transmission (Manual 6). The best I can do to upgrade this is rebuild it to be stronger (after 500HP at the wheels, I would blow this transmission up like a grenade), and get a higher stall torque converter (the converter locks up at a higher RPM) with a transmission cooler. This won't add any power, but like you said, it will increase how much of the power is being used correctly wheel to ground.
Just incase you were wondering the gear ratio differences for my car:
Spoiler:You can see you have a much stronger launch (assuming you don't spin the tires) with the Automatic in this year of the car, but you really only have 3 gears to play with, compared to the manual's 4 when racing. (You don't want to be in an OverDrive gear when trying to race, unless you are on the highway racing and now it's time to just drive to your destination after winning. lol.) However, the automatic transmission is also HEAVIER and heavier planetary gearing, so there is more parasitic power loss by the time it reaches the wheels. That's why my BHP -> RWHP is so dramatically different.
