The cheering stopped the very instant the ambulance came onto the track and the stretcher came out of it. That was the final lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001. (Oy, 2001 was a horrific year, too, 9-11, Columbine...)

I think most can agree that the brutal wrecks that can happen there are a LOT of fun to watch, but only if no one is seriously hurt. In that very race about ... oh, 40 to go? There was a much worse crash involving a roll and about seven damaged cars that had no injuries.
Odd how my memory does work for random crap like this. :?
