it was a shirt? i thought it was nothing because the color was almost same to me.
besides, doomguy from original doom title got nothing on his belly...so i colored like this.
whatever it's just my drawn style. by the way i fixed doomguy.
because does looks like a he doesn't wear pants...'_'

He's wearing stuff in-game, which is arguably more important. That patch of brown is a belt pouch, I'm assuming; he has to keep ammo somewhere.

I also always assumed it was just his stomach. Even the Doom guy in Quake 3 is like that.

Actually, if you take a closer look at the Doom titlescreen, you'll notice a darker brown piece at the right edge of the belly.
To me it looks like the rest of his shirt, wich has been ripped apart during battle and thus revealing the bare skin underneath... there're also two scratch marks on the stomach, wich support that theory!

Hmmm, imgur jpegged this but it's still clear enough:

Referring to the original box art you can see thet the Doomguy's shirt is ripped and there are even claw marks to further support this. Perhaps more importantly, the marine in the background has his stomach fully covered.



Quite why this rip in the Doomguy's clothing has morphed into "Doomguy has his belly out in the open at all times by armour design" I'm not sure.

I think that the more important detail is that Duke isn't liver-failure yellow.

i'd suppose it's supported by Rule of Cool rather than realistic standpoint of the whole matter. if you're a 300 lbs muscle man, it's been more of a rule of thumb to have their upper body exposed, only wearing an armor (or if you're really cool, you don't need such silly things as "protection" because you'll be gunning down fiends en forte with little to no chance of retaliation), showing off how big and powerful and cool and oh so sexy they are.

they're just gay for abs.

There's actually a reason not to cover the abs with rigid armor, which is mobility. This armor design allows the marine to bend, so he can tie his shoelaces back for example.
