Yep, though for some reason that doesn't apply to open source non-Doom projects - not properly adhering to licenses of such projects is a flamewar-worthy offence.

Of course, "borrowing" resources from commercial games is perfectly fine .

At least I won't. Been pushing to make everything graphically from scratch these days. It's a long road but it's very rewarding...

Heh, dude.. It doesn't matter. If you don't want anyone to EVER use it, then you can not release it. Just posting a single image does no harm really, but if you were to post the whole set, nothing would stop someone from using it unless it was in JPG (actually they could still use it, but they'd have to be very talented to get it to look right). Even if you don't release until you release it in a WAD, someone could use it then too.

I don't see why it matters, just ask for credit to be given or something? Most people on here (if not all) are considerate enough to give someone credit for work used.

Just make it clear when you post it that you don't want people to "borrow" it.

Unfortunately, what will stop people from not listening to that request? We have people like that taking sprites from the Mystical Forest Zone and not giving credits or even asking for permissions. And half the time, there's little we can actually do about it. They're all over the place on DeviantArt, NewGrounds, and the like.

What about instead of JPG, post the sprite sheet scaled down an arbitrary (hard to guess) value?

In that case, you're best not posting anything original at all.
People will nick your stuff, no matter how often you request for them not to. It's a sad reality to face. Whether accidentally (forgot to ask permission and thought they did) or intentionally (this'll be too cool I don't need to ask permission!), putting up something on a public forum makes it up for grabs to anyone. Sure, sometimes people will respect your wishes and not re-use it, and sometimes people will PM you with a request, but there's always the slight chance that someone will nick it.

Does that mean you actually shouldn't post up anything? No, of course not. That'd be silly, not to mention extremely counterproductive.
Just means you have to be patient and vigilant.

Yes it will. The human eye will be able to discern quite well what's being presented (remember those little screenshots from the back of the game box?), but if someone attempts to use them in Doom while in that state, they'll either have midget monsters or uglily scaled versions thereof.

This is the graphical equivalent of when a radio DJ boasts about having a "world-exclusive" track and then proceeds to plaster jingles all over it to the point of ruining it for the listener. Not all of us are gonna rip it and put it on Soundcloud. Jesus ...

Posting stuff either here or on the Carnival is primarily for feedback purposes. There's no need to post the entire sheet for that. If anyone nicks it from here or there, then they're a dick.

Alternatively, you can do what I do, which is not concern myself with it. Chances are it's gonna happen. If they give due credit, all well and good. I get more annoyed when people nick stuff by proxy - other people's stuff that I had to ask for permission to use (mentioning no names, but it involves resources from Legacy of Suffering and a rather notorious randomizer mod, the author citing my usage as licence to act with impunity).
