Even in HL I never did crouch that much, however you may have a point on the crouch jumping: that's the most usefull thing in that whole game! Even so, how would that increase the doom experience - not much I think.
geedougg wrote:BTW about the 16-Bit issue: I think as long as you're going for something higher than 8-Bit, you might as well go all the way (if you're gonna put the effort into it) and go for 32-Bit.... That's definitely what I want....
Ok: the reason why I said 16bit is because of this.
from 8bit to 16bit you add 65280 new colours
but from 8bit to 32bit you add 4294967040 new colours. Now I don't know how much harder that is to implement, I do know that you don't need all those colours for Doom, and anyway 32bit would hinder the performance a bit.

16 and 32 bit are both the same amount of work to implement. The major factor is creating the colormaps and after that it's just having code that can render words and other code that can render dwords. Depending on how you do it 32 bit can even be faster. Writing a 16 bit value to system memory is as fast as writing a 32 bit value so the only place where the higher amount of data is a factor is the transfer to video memory. If this can be done asynchronously with a hardware blitter it may easily be that the difference won't be noticable because in the mean time the next frame can be processed.

Hinderance of performance? Yes. Harder to implement: A little bit. But if you'e going to put the effort into it then why not go for the full nine?! Besides adding support for more colours DOES NOT work the way you described! Heh that's funny though!

As for "the doom experience": You know what I've learned through the years? Even the earliest Boom was paradoxically incorrect and "non-Doomish" and with every new feature added to ZDooM, that "doom experience" you're talking about goes further down the tolet. Which is all the better, in my opinion, because if there's ONE OTHER THING I've learned through the years, it's this: "FUCK the Doom experience!".

OK people, you may start the flamiiinnnnggg............................., NNNOW!

I've noticed the "only 8bbp supported" message in Zdoom for a very long time so.
Question: Why hasn't it been done? Is it a waste of time, too hard or just not particularly high on the priority list?

It's not a waste of time,
it's not hard to do (but work intensive),
but unfortunately on the bottom of the priority list (fog would look so much better...)

Actally yeah it's because it's high on the priority list, because it shouldn't be THAT hard to do, and it's definitely not a waste of time! :)

Edit: Hmm, looks like Graf beat me to it by 3 minutes! Damn slow Cable internet!

Yeah, and the transparencies would work so much nicer too. Well, it's nice to know that we may see this feature implemented some time and that it isn't some kind of "urban legend".

ROFL @ "Urban Legend"! Haha!

I'd have to disagree though that "fog" and "trasparencies" look "better".... They definitely don't. They DO look, umm, "different", though. Of course, being me I'd still like to (as always) have my cake and eat it too and lick the plate clean as well, so I'd rather have fog and trasparencies in an engine that handles 32-bit colour...! :P

About the fog: we were saying that with 32bit it would look better...

By now, my vote will count for relatively little, but I recommend a release of whatever is available now.

You voted on something else because you didn't understand the l33tness of strife support; strife being a game that you didn't play, and asking about it's greatness?
Why do you think Randy made Zdoom HAVE STRIFE SUPPORT?!?

DIE!

Unfortunately, Windows programs don't play well under Linux. :( A native version should be infinitely better. :P
Writing a 16 bit value to system memory is as fast as writing a 32 bit value
Except, you can also write two 16-bit values at the same speed as one 32-bit value. Actually, the biggest reason 32-bit can be faster is because you can use MMX to manipulate 32-bit color values.. AFAIK you can't do that with 16-bit values.

Strife is the coolest game after Doom.
