Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
I had some of the issues people were talking about when I upgraded from 7 to 10. I did a clean install with 10 and haven't had any issues since. Just like drivers, straight "upgrading" an OS rather than doing a clean install is never a good idea.

As long as the forced driver update thing isn't resolved, Windows 10 is a no-go for me. I absolutely cannot risk any loss of productivity due to a botched driver update - and they are close to inevitable in the long run.
Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
So remember that post I made on the previous page.
Well.
I'm on 10 now.
because trying to avoid the upgrade by uninstalling the Windows 10 upgrade app apparently corrupted my Windows.
lol.
Had to reset my PC. All my files are intact due to a backup I did a scant few hours before this happened - but yeah, on a new install now. Running 10. It's fine. I guess. Whatever.

I've been planning of removing that goddamned GWX but thanks to my laziness I'm safe. There would be outrage if that happened to me.Jimmy wrote: because trying to avoid the upgrade by uninstalling the Windows 10 upgrade app apparently corrupted my Windows.
Now the question is, how do I remove GWX without it destroying my PC? Or did you remove it while having the worst luck?

It's far more advanced than that...early this year they forced hardware makers to block newer CPU's from running Win 7/8. (anything from Skylake and up is likely to be affected, although Skylakes were out before the decision so not all of them will be - mine isn't for example)4thcharacter wrote:I hope they don't remove support for Windows 7 or if they have to make Windows 10 as good as it. Win 7 still has four years.
There's a few utilities out there that can remove it and disable the telemetry etc, the one I used was called Aegis I think.4thcharacter wrote:I've been planning of removing that goddamned GWX but thanks to my laziness I'm safe. There would be outrage if that happened to me.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
From what I'm reading, they don't block W7 or 8 to run, but windows will see if you're running on such a platform and not offer you the ability to use windows update. Which is pretty much just as bad, reallyThe Ultimate DooMer wrote:It's far more advanced than that...early this year they forced hardware makers to block newer CPU's from running Win 7/8. Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
No that's still wrong. They aren't blocking you from anything, so much as they are preventing you from installing an OS that will flat out not work on your CPU. You require NX bit (No Execute Bit) support, among PAE, SSE2, and apparently CMPXCHG16B for x64.InsanityBringer wrote:From what I'm reading, they don't block W7 or 8 to run, but windows will see if you're running on such a platform and not offer you the ability to use windows update. Am I missing something? Are you implying that these new CPUs are deprecating these extensions? I haven't kept up to date with them. I do sort of doubt these new architectures are deprecating them thoughedward850 wrote:No that's still wrong. Like, if there is legitimately a reason for W7/W8 to not work on these newer CPUs, I will fully understand why they won't offer updates, but I can't find anything of the sort
ED: I guess my original post was a little misworded, its not like they're blocking the usage of Windows Update, it sounds like they just won't be offering new updates after a certain point.
Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
Ah, I see my mistake. You're talking about 7/8, not 7/8 upgrading to 10. They aren't blocking updates for Skylake CPUs. In fact it sounds like they are extending the support window for them. The issue however comes to compatibility; 7/8 weren't designed with Skylake in mind, so they really can't "just" go back and retro-fit full support so it'll only be getting security support for the interim.
It's pretty much a case of pointing out to customers that the new CPUs are much better off with an OS designed to actually run on them, and they are keeping open the Windows Update window to at-least make sure the OS is going to run stable.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
What I find strange here is that everybody makes out a conspiracy when it is perfectly logical business to focus hardware driver development on the current version of Windows instead of the old ones which are no longer in production. They even explicitly state this in the linked article:
I just wonder what will happen in 4 years when the upgrade-refuser problem that's already huge with XP gets compounded by all those stubborn people who are dead set on remaining on "the last good Windows version." This will become a security nightmare for the entire internet.
I think the same will be true for Mac OSX and Linux as well that older versions will have problems running on the latest hardware.Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support. This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon, while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
It's kinda weird how I might have thought the same despite Microsoft not only being upfront about their desire to have everyone on 10, but watching the Extra Credits episode on the WoW vanilla server takedown really hammered in the point that a singular version of software is just better for the developers overall, and no matter how much the people might whine about it, there's always going to be pressure. I end up missing how Firestorm Viewer talks about it too, though they make the effort to keep two versions back available to their userbase, while Linden Labs has the stupidest upgrade policy I've seen-forcing the user to update only after the person attempts to log in! I should know there's a new version before I hit the login button and I shouldn't be forced to wait until it's done downloading to keep using the experience. But that's a bit of a side track. My point is that all of these companies want ideally one version of their software.
Actually, I can recall what happens when there are multiple versions of something around. Just look at Minecraft Joules. People kept trying to get around the lossy aspect of this power system resulting in the lockdown of the APIs, which ultimately forced the creation of another power transfer system, and then everyone started using that one instead. Say hello to the age of Redstone Flux, because Minecraft Joules is dead! ...Bah not as solid of an example as I'd like.

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
My only gripe so far is the way it wants to force the machine to reboot every so often, and the best you can do is "schedule for later" rather than "fuck off and let me reboot manually when it's convenient".

Is this part of the "silent update" crap, or is this just for the hell of it?ETTiNGRiNDER wrote:My only gripe so far is the way it wants to force the machine to reboot every so often,

Part of the updates. The machine often needs to be rebooted to apply them, and Windows prefers to just do it or force you to schedule it instead of letting you say "I'll do it myself".

Re: Anyone Regret Updating to Windows 10?
The only annoying part of this reboot setup is that my tablet fails to restart correctly. If I turn it off, then back on again, it'll boot. But if it restarts, it's hung on the starting screen until I turn it off and on again, which defeats the purpose of having the tablet be an always on machine.
