And, of course, that wouldn't cover people who want to use the original colours with new skins. ;)

Provided that the presets are defined in the game somehow, there is no reason that they would be any less accurate than remapped graphics.

Personally, I have no need for them as I like messing with the colour sliders and dont really care about the (as I see them) quite unattractive default colours. However, it does seem to be a popular request.

Here's a thought: could such colour presets be defined in the playerclass (I don't think that has been suggested, but I may have missed it)? The format could be the same as normal DECORATE translations but perhaps with the addition of giving the preset a name. Zdoom would have the ability to read presets from the player class. The player setup could have a selection field a bit like the skin and voice options choices but for colour. The sliders could still also be used (with the selection field reading "custom") instead. This suggestion would also allow the use of custom player classes that use different graphics and allow them to have suitable pre-defined colour selection options.

That's a good one, Enjay. I like that idea. :)

It would also be useful to be able to define multiple colored parts; you can't color the Rebel's green bands, which was done in the original Strife for multiplayer, I think.

If the original translations get supported it will be done by using the original translation tables, not some emulation via color range. For all games except Hexen they are already defined and Hexen has them as binary lumps in the IWAD.

Actually, that was a (relatively) recent change to Zdoom to comply with how Strife did it originally. Prior to the change, Zdoom used to apply the colour translation to the green armbands only. However, it was pointed out that this was not correct when compared to the original Strife which coloured the brown uniform instead. Personally, I think the armband colouring was much nicer but the whole suit is true to the original exe and you know how people get about that kind of stuff. ;)

I suspect that the green armbands would have originally been for multiplayer but at some point someone decided they didn't allow for quick/easy enough identification of who was who and so the way it was done got changed.

I mean, I'm pretty sure in the original sprites both the armbands and the suit got recolored. I know that the suit changed color.

Oh, right. Unfortunately, I have no way to check that.

This is a site that I had bookmarked like around 10 years ago. So, the armbands match the color of the helmet, and thus never get recolored.

My bad

And my brother is bugging me to play some strife coop, and I reply, not until you play some quake coop, because I'm not that into strife, although I would some day want to try some coop with my brother, and he hates quake for being too brown, and would rather play hexen II instead.

Strife has never worked in coop. With Karate Chris' fixes for multiplayer conversations, you could give it a try, but chances are you'd never be able to finish it.

The IWAD maps don't work in coop. Some even don't have proper starts for the other players.

About strife coop: Assuming you added coop starts, I'm pretty sure the game works by giving the player dummy items to tell where he is in the story, but in coop both players could have different items, screwing up the game.

Totally. And since the other player's items can't be tracked each one is basically playing the story for himself - which would end as soon as a one time action is triggered.
