Yeah, damage difference between the pistol and the shotgun was a bit too much. The pistol was like a peanut shooter, it needed more punch, like a magnum or desert eagle.

About the music, PSX Doom was slower than PC Doom and had that colored lighting, so ambient music was more fitting. Doom 1 was not only heavy metal: E1M3, E1M5, E1m7 and E1M8 had a lot of suspense and keep me in the edge of my seat when I was younger.

I wish... but from what I've seen over at DW forums I feel like it's going to be treated basically like Federation Force. Which sucks because unlike FF, which deserves the poor reception, this looks great.

You sure you're looking at the same Doomworld forums? There have been a couple of naysayers over there, but discussions about the new Doom have actually been really balanced and fair. Like I said, even over there, it's still getting more positive reception than negative.

If you really want negativity, try Youtube comments, NeoGAF threads, or Reddit. I mean, even in the latter, some knucledraggers over at the latter are claiming to take credit for the changes shown in the latest screenshots, particularly with the Cacodemon's coloring.

All 3 of these are technically cheating. Especially Youtube comments. :P

One negative I've got about this that immediately sticks out, which is entirely personal: that disgusting excuse for a pistol. Totally generic 2010s-video-game-greebling visual technobabble, which is fine for the BFG and plasma rifle but... this???

But from what I saw of the super shotgun in that original preview vid far more than offsets that.

Love the way the Hell maps look in any event - definitely gives that sense of place and there actually being a world out there. (I like how it ironically looks so much more real than the techbases - which actually works in a They Live/The Matrix/The Secret World/etc. way if one considers the irreal, soul-crushing nature of much of sterilized, consumption-based, nominalistic modern life.)

I don't like the "glory kills spawns health and ammo" thing or the lack of coop in the campaign mode, but otherwise i'm excited about what I've seen and read of the game.

GameInformer are posting more stuff about Doom 4 here. Newest one is a video about the environments.

Also, two designs for Doom 4 versions of those doofy vinyl toys you see at Gamespot leaked out, giving a closer look (of sorts) at our new hero:

it'd make for a poor fit considering the direction the game is going in. it worked in PSX Doom because of the moody lightning, and the game being tuned to fit the control-scheme of the PSX controller. that's not to say i dislike Aubrey's works, though, and i'm absolutely psyched for the anniversary edition of the PSX Doom soundtrack. it's just that it would work if the game took a moodier approach, which it failed at miserably with Doom 3.
Is it safe to say Doom 3 was the Sonic 06 of the franchise? It wasn't as HUGE of a failure as that game but still.

I don't think that's even remotely accurate. Doom 3 was a good-quality FPS with some very impressive technical achievements, that just happened to not really resemble its namesake as much as everyone wanted while releasing only a few months before the incredible Half-Life 2, which definitely rained on its parade a little.

Sonic '06 was a debacle on every level - design, development, marketing and release.

Man, I kinda wish the Doom 4 Guy's helmet was tan. Looks so weird when the entire suit is the same color - more like the Master Chief than the Doom Guy.

I suppose this is going to be one of the first mods for the game.

Doom 3 was by no means the massive failure that Sonic 06 was. For one, Doom 3 actually functioned.

To me, Doom 3 didn't feel much like an FPS, but more of a horror game. I still enjoyed it, but not as much as the classic games.

Well, I mostly wanted Hodges back because I really want a remastered version of the PSX Doom menu and intermission themes. That, and I feel dark ambient music would fit more with the Hell levels and not the industrial music, which is more fitting for the techbase levels. Still, I have faith in Mick Gordon delivering a great soundtrack, like in Wolfenstein: TNO.
