Good idea but based on my observation, there's a downside to unfiltered high res sprites and textures that becomes very apparent with modern high res video displays: the pixels kind of "swim" or shimmer (not sure what's the correct term) as stuff moves around the screen. Also with repeating textures, the moire effect becomes horrendously obvious.

This is why linear mipmapping exists.

Have you thought about making your sprites in a vector image editor? That way you can scale them to any size you want before exporting them as pngs or whatever. Granted, they might be a bit cartoony looking, but if you're going for something with casual appeal, that might work best.

Then again, depends on what you're trying to do and what you mean by "casual". :p

In your opinion, which one would be more appealing to casuals the general public:

1) A first person shooter with blocky unfiltered sprites and textures (Doom resolution resources)
2) A first person shooter with bi/trilinear filtered sprites and textures (BUILD era Shadow Warrior/Blood/Redneck Rampage resolution resources)

In my experience, unfiltered low res sprites make people go "Haha it's a retro game" and low res filtered sprites make people go "Ew it has bad graphics".
Of course, you can take 5 minutes drawing everything for the game in MS paint and people say "It's retro not lazy". So, I dunno.
Personally, I like the look of unfiltered low and high res sprites, or filtered high res sprites. NEVER filter a low res sprite.

Unfiltered things look alright up to about this resolution.

Very artsy looking Doom-resolution sprites (think Hexen/Doom monsters) look absolutely great unfiltered too, but that stuff is very time consuming.

Nah, American football is just silly (e.g. a game of 4x15 minutes that takes around 3 hours to play with more than half the team off the pitch at any one time). It's the other football that rustles my jimmies.
