The Still New What Did You Last Do Thread
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I think my laptop is starting to take its last breaths, or least some component is getting old. I got into this conclusion, since the screen's been rather weird. Brightness feels too high, and when I played today Minecraft, I noticed some strange color effects on dark areas (having some flickering between yellow to red) or some other anomalies in colors (black wool having red spots.) Other games have similar effects, less or worse. It's subtle, but still visible while browsing webs.
At least next buy is definitely not a laptop. It's been more convenient when going in lan parties, but I now got a car to move about, and I definitely need more power to run some games/mods better. Plus, easier to clean, or get new components.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Just finished playing through Quake 4 again. The game was pretty well put together save for a few annoyances, like giving me plenty of ammo for guns that I never used, and not having a different button for "interact with stuff" and "kill stuff." (several times while trying to get a medic to heal me, the medic would move slightly such that my reticle wasn't on them anymore, and I'd accidentally fire a rocket, killing myself.)
On a (mostly) unrelated note, I kinda wish id or someone would make a sequal/HD remake of the first Quake.

Regarding Blox's chat log, I understand some folks will quickly recommend just playing the game in co-op mode to bypass the "dumb AI" issue. I disagree quite a lot with this.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Found that, despite what people tell me, Steam is still shit.
Why? Because I just tried to help someone install Total War : Shogun 2. They bought it on disk from a store. All the many GB of files are on the disks (2xDVD) and yet every time he tries to install the game, it installs 143MB and then goes online to try and download 12GB of data. There is a reason he bought the disks - he doesn't have the ability to DL 12GB of data! He doesn't care about updates, he is happy to play the original release version. But Steam won't let him! Every time, no matter how the install is started, it installs 143MB and then tries to DL the rest.
I went on line and found that the "solution" is to use Steam to delete local content and then start the install from the command line specifying the CD drive where the files can be found. This does not work - again 143MB gets installed then the download starts.
Another "solution" is to change the location of your download server and restart the installation. Same result.
Other "solutions" involved doing the above and picking "reinstall". Same result.
Another "solution" is to disconnect the internet and try to install from the disk. Steam refuses to do that saying that it needs to be logged in to install the game.
I found another 4 or 5 suggested solutions. None of them worked. All started the install process, installed 143MB and then started downloading 12GB of data. Unwanted data!
He has 2 disks. He has all the data for the game in his hand but Steam will not allow him to play.
Seriously, if you have the game data on disk, why the fuck isn't there an install from disk option?
People like this shit?

More than likely, "people" have a capable internet connection and have just flat-out quit buying games from the shelves. Really, if devs are going to force people to download ~95% of the game data in the first place, there's not really much point to having the disc around, unless you must have something on the shelf.Enjay wrote:People like this shit?
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Although, even on a fairly decent "average" connection (rather than a super-fast fibre connection etc), 12GB is not going to be a particularly quick download and, even now, it's not unusual for people to have monthly download limits which 12GB would eat into quite heavily I suspect.wildweasel wrote:More than likely, "people" have a capable internet connection and have just flat-out quit buying games from the shelves.
I was in a game store the other day and was amused to see just how many DVD boxes with nothing in them were sitting in the "Downloads" section of the store. I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure why something like that exists really. I mean, who goes to a store to buy an empty box that only lets them do exactly what they could on line but without having to make the trip to the store?wildweasel wrote:Really, if devs are going to force people to download ~95% of the game data in the first place, there's not really much point to having the disc around, unless you must have something on the shelf.
And, thinking about it, I suppose that the answer is people with no way to pay for stuff on line or your granny who wants to buy you a game but who doesn't even have a computer, let alone Steam.
All that being said, however, the particular copy of Total War: Shogun 2, in this case, has a full game's worth of data on the DVDs so it still begs the question in my mind, why can't the game be installed from those disks?

New map, engineered to accomodate the Project MSX wad.

Kinda went for shits and giggles.
Notes:
-That thing in the middle is a well-adorned 3D bridge. GZDoomBuilder makes it SO MUCH EASIER to do stuff.

Bought the humble bundle. BF3, Mirror's edge, Crysis 2, Dead space 1/3... and it was only 5 bucks, to boot! Also a MOH game, The Sims, and whatever Burnout Paradise is, but I don't care about those.

Fear of pirated copies, perhaps?Enjay wrote:why can't the game be installed from those disks?
Heh. Takes over 40 minutes to download one gigs worth of data where I live now. And that was best time, even. Imagine my face when I got Civ 5 DVD from brother, then the realization I need to wait till night to download all the fucking data which should have been in DVD. As someone who prefers to have material stuff than packed in bits, I find this kind of wringing... annoying, to say the least.
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
I was on 28.8k dialup until 2008 or 2009, and it made Steam something not worth ever touching. Retail copy of Saints Row 2, and it wouldn't let me install it from disc. It'd freeze on some preparing files message, I could let it sit for literally a whole day, and it'd still be frozen. There's no way I was going to be downloading a several gig game on that connection, so it turned out I'd thrown my money away. Steam is simply not functional on that kind of connection.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
i'm glad we finally have better internet around since about a year or so back. it was rather slow back then, and one download ongoing at one computer bogged the whole internet down. though this always-online BS is pretty stupid, considering what you pay for when getting a physical copy.
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
There is. I'm confused by your situation as I install steam games from disk all the time. It's basically the only option I have for newly released games due to bandwidth caps, so I know it works.Enjay wrote:Seriously, if you have the game data on disk, why the fuck isn't there an install from disk option?
If you are still welling to listen to suggestions rather then just default to anger-rant mode, Steam games come packaged in a way that can be restored directly from the disk itself as if it was a backup. In the client, go to "Steam -> Backup and Restore Games -> Restore a previous backup". Select the CD drive and it should find a game to restore.
