So I played through the much-fabled Mars Doom last night. Not to say too much about the .WAD itself, it's a late 90's affair, has it's issues and fair share of "where the fuck now?" moments, but anyone who's played it can probably guess where I'm going with this.

From a technical standpoint, I really do tip my hat to the authors. To effectively pull off an escort mission in Doom using nothing but DEHackED is no mean feat, but as I led this poor slip of a girl to safety, all I wanted to do was this:
Spoiler: relax, work safe
I'm no prude, but that was just cheap and unnecessary. Why is her bap hanging out? Even Doom's stock zombies have a bit of clothing damage, but this is just ridiculous. Also, she's taller than me by a clear head.

question, my speakers have been producing sound that, with time, has sounded all the more muddier. i'm unsure if this is the cause of the laptop's soundcard being a POS, or if the speakers are actually failing and i might have busted something in them with volume or whatever. how do i find out what is the issue?

On Saturday, out of nowhere, someone who's been inactive for quite a while came back and declared war on our corp. He gave us some trouble, inviting us to duels repeatedly (all three of us at once). He almost caught his kiting Tristan, but his tech-2 drones give huge trouble to whoever catches him. We still almost killed him, then he grabbed his Dominix-class battleship. Using frigates, we still almost killed that! He docked up with 7% structure left. But yesterday, we struck first blood. He had a pretty nicely fit Merlin and was just trying to run circles around us, until he did a fly-by of my friend's Algos-class destroyer.

...War-target got webbed, warp-scramed, and didn't survive his drones and guns for 30 seconds. Was totally tech-2 fit, worth three times as much as the destroyer that killed him. :P
The player must've been looking for combat experience; there's just no justifiable way to pick a fight with players who look like they know what they're doing with cheaper equipment. (It also proves that the most expensive stuff doesn't always guarantee victory. Ever seen some of the Goonswarm and Test Alliance Please Ignore propaganda posters online?)

Nope, guy knew exactly what he was doing, aside from that Merlin. He killed my Arbitrator and almost killed my fleet's Vexor and Vengeance (He ended up ransoming my friend's Vexor for 5 mil) with the most impressive Vexor fit I've ever seen.

But the war ended. The day after that, guy said he'll drop the war for 50 million ISK, since he said he's in a hurry. My friend who runs our corp (he always goes the extra mile) said "50 mil to end the war, to buy your obvious shell corp, and for the Vexor and Tristan fit." The guy agreed, made my friend CEO of his corp, we kicked him out of his own corp, called off the war... and then paid him 50 mil that we actually didn't have to 'cause we got everything we really wanted by that point. If he declared war on us again, we could've moved into his shell corp and he'd have to pay to declare war again. :P

But yeah, we still have no clue what in the hell happened. From how that guy tanked us, he was obviously a really skilled, really experienced player, but his killboard on eve-kill.net implies he hasn't been active in three years. From how he sped directly to me on a few occasions when I was mining right after he logged on, we think he had a cloaked buddy scouting for him. But still, back to normal. I think we still ended up coming out of the war with a positive killboard, though. :P

All these stories are really getting me interested in this game. How hard is it to pick up/how much do you have to grind before you start having fun? The latter is my real problem with MMOs, as sometimes they never get past that point.

If not, well...Star Citizen might be for me instead.

They seem to look pretty good in the Doom palette, so it might very well be usable.

The game has a pretty steep learning curve. I'm only doing this well because I've been hearing my friend (who runs the corp I joined) talking about it at college for the last year before I picked the game up. How long it takes before having fun... depends mostly on what you're doing, really. You can get into combat/security missions pretty quickly, right after you finish the tutorials, and that's pretty fun. Mining makes a hell of a lot of money, but it's really boring. The benefit of mining (and the reason I mine so much :P ) is that you can click on an asteroid and go do something else for 20 minutes, as long as you're listening to what's happening.

Of course, the biggest plus of Eve Online is that skill training doesn't take any effort. You just set the skill to train, and it trains automatically over time. Depending on the skill, though, it takes anywhere from an hour from smaller skills to a month for some of the higher-level stuff. The game does have a two-week (three-week, if you do a buddy account trial) if you want to try it out, though.

@Blox: That is amazing! :shock:
