Unpopular Doom opinions
Re: Unpopular Doom opinions
Doom 3 and Doom 2016 are both totally remakes.. the original story-lines are ignored and its starting from the beginning. That's a remake. A remake isn't an exact replica. I think the new term people throw around is 'reboot' then that. Anyway Doom 3 was such a disappointment, but it actually had that feeling of being the only guy left alive, and had a really creepy atmosphere which is exactly what I imagined after reading the original Doom manual "All your buddies are dead". This new Doom game just looks like all the other modern shooters from the past 5 or so years in a blender. Just my unpopular opinion.

I haven't looked too far into the story of the new doom as I don't want spoilers (haven't played it yet) but I have heard from a few people that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for the new doom to be a proper sequel to the either Doom 64 or Doom 2

That's what I've heard too, that if you pay attention and read the snippets of lore that you can pick up, there's information that ties in the events of Doom1 and Doom2.zrrion the insect wrote:I haven't looked too far into the story of the new doom as I don't want spoilers (haven't played it yet) but I have heard from a few people that it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for the new doom to be a proper sequel to the either Doom 64 or Doom 2
Doom3, on the other hand, may as well be a remake, since I don't think there's any ties to the original games and tries to re-envision Doom1's story with a more horror feel. Doom 2016 feels like it's moved the story forward in dealing with the aftermath of the earlier games.

Re: Unpopular Doom opinions
Not a fan at all of the demigod doomguy lore in the new game (though my opinion of it softened from "ick poo gross no" to "i guess i can see the appeal" when it came to mind while reading Psalm 18 which I associate with BD fatalities for reasons). One of the big appeals was precisely that the Doomguy was, for all his credentials, a genuine human being who wants to do right.
I dunno, maybe I'll just headcanon the best of both worlds together and whenif I ever get into D4 I'll just assume that Doomguy is actually Farah from a Shattered Starlight AU.
EDIT: Then again, after connecting the new Doomguy backstory with Psalm 139 (which incidentially is the source of the name of UD E4M2), the "Frankenstein really is the monster" understanding comes with understanding that this Doomguy really is Everyman.

To be fair, Doom 4 Guy seemed to start out just a normal badass that some higher power went "oh, shit, we can use this guy" and turned him from figuratively unstoppable to literally unstoppable.
... By Hell, anyway.

Vae, in all honesty I absolutely adore your penchant for religious symbolism and tie-ins
It's something I've always wanted to build a game/mod around, and seeing you make connections like that (Brutal Doom and Psalms, who would have thought?) gives me the giggles. Deathsong12 used to do that in the ZD-RPG too; we'd play off the ideas for pages upon pages.

Re: Unpopular Doom opinions
While doing some more ZD modding experiments, I've discovered a truly unpopular opinion:
I think Doom is annoying for defining Z as the up axis, given that so much geometry resources are written around the assumption that Y is the up axis.

After being able to see and play again with Quake 4 weapons thanks to DBT's mod, I can say that I think that Quake 4 weapons more better than the ones in Doom. Maybe not the BFG though, i see it as a legend.
Quake 4's arsenal is my guilty pleasure.
