Hexen II - Shadows of Chaos

Post by BloodShot »

Anybody over here have Hexen 2? If so I just released a demo for a mission pack/semi overhaul called shadows of chaos

It takes inspiration from heretic, hexen 1 and doom in some ways, and aims to fix some issues with hexen 2 as well. I based it on the Game of Tomes RPG mod for Hexen 2.

Features:
-New enemies, recreations from hexen and heretic as well as a brand new fodder berserker type
-BSP2 format which allows for very large maps (thanks to spike)
-more in depth RPG system, stats affect your damage based on your class, leveling up improves/gets you some new weapon skills
-new altfires for existing weapons
-revamped blood and gore, with lesser enemies having decapitation death animations
-full coop support with %XP loss on death and a checkpoint system

Here's the page with the demo if anyone is interested

If it fixes the level design I'll bite.

Well it's all new levels, and they follow closer to doom and quake with lite puzzles instead of keys, rather than hexen 1 and 2.

There's branching paths but you won't be getting lost looking for items or switches

I personally think HUB worlds and interconnected levels are a good idea. It's just that Hexen 1 and 2 did a very poor job with them. If they take some inspiration from Metroid I think it will turn out much better.

Oh i love hubs and metroidvania type games. I'm just not sure my skill as a mapper is there yet to make a hub that is properly done.

The full release will have one, but i don't want to fall into the same trappings that the original games did

I left a more detailed feedback over on QuakeOne, but I thought I'd leave a message here for anyone on the fence about looking into it: this is worth trying.

Well I got stuck. I was in the library and I found all the book switches but no matter what I did, one of them wouldn't move.

This is so COOL! I'm flattered that you liked GoT enough to expand on it.

I've been making a lot of updates to Game of Tomes over the last month to make it more friendly for COOP. I'm excited to try out Shadows of Chaos. I wish I'd seen it sooner!
