Idle Doom: Tech Breakthrough (Final version)

Post by Albertoni »

Come all, ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on the tale of how Doomguy effortlessly defeated a legion of hell bigger than all of the other Doom games combined! Or just download and play it, I guess.

Download (GZDoom required, ZDoom 2.8.1 doesn't cut it): https://www.doomworld.com/files/file/18 ... akthrough/

Changelog: Added TITLEPIC, sky and ending; Fixed Cyberdemons being able to kill you; Level looks a bit better.

Spoiler:
Story:

Doomguy was relaxing after a busy day. He was playing some games on Firefox 829. Suddenly, he had an idea. He phoned his friend at UAC, John Science.
  • John: Hello, Doomguy! How are you?
  • Doomguy: Unf! Urgh grunt!
  • John: An idea to effortlessly destroy all of Hell? We run a teleporter to Hell, pull them in one by one and a we fire half a dozen BFGs at what comes through? Sounds good! Can't see that going wrong!
  • Doomguy: Ungh oomph!
  • John: I'll talk to my boss tomorrow, see if he thinks we can do it. Pass by the lab when you got the time.
The next day...
  • Doomguy: Yeaargh!
  • John: Hey there, bud! I talked to my boss and I got some bad news. UAC cut our funding on Hell-related matters. Screaming something about "more rendering servers to the megatexture gods!," whatever that means.
  • Doomguy: Urgh...
  • John: Don't worry, it wasn't a flat out no. We got a pistol and a small teleporter.
  • Doomguy: Go fuck yourself!
  • John: Easy buddy, no need to get brutal. We show them that the idea works by killing demons and he gets us funding to upgrade the system. We'll build your dream killing machine. Let me show you the prototype...

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed it.

Cyberdemon: The one problem with nightmare is that revived monsters don't give money, which was also the reason why I skipped the Arch-Vile. Still, if you want more carnage or to make it harder... Go for it!

Are the cyberdemons supposed to be able to kill the player? Because it was rather unexpected.

I kiiiinda forgot to mention that. I'm very sorry. A very unlucky stray rocket from the machines might also kill you.
Got any ideas on how to fix it? Maybe an invisible but impassable 3d sector would block the blast?

Honestly, if it was me, I would be lazy and just grant the player invulnerability upon beginning the game.
Also, just a small remark: because Cyberdemons are immune to radius damage, I really had to drop down from Rockets to Super Shotgun to make progress against them. Of course, perhaps this was intentional on your part.

Great idea, and yes. From my (30 minutes of) testing, it's more effective to use rockets against Barons until you can afford the BFG. The monsters give HP / 10 money, so that isn't an issue.

Yeah, I didn't even bother upgrading to cyberdemons until I'd got the BFG. Once you have both though, the money comes rolling in and you can get your final upgrades fairly quickly after that. The cybies being able to kill you is annoying though because it means you can't stand right by the window to watch the carnage.

Some sort of ending would have been nice - even if it was just an acknowledgement popping up to say that you've maxed everything.

Cybies killing you is fixed, and the ending is being worked on. :)
