Most hated Doom enemy in your book?
What enemy has caused you hell/irked you for a really long time?
For me, the pain elemental and hell knight are tied.
Ask me about it though.

Sometimes I really hate archviles and sometimes I find them as a piece of cake. Same for the revenants, because there are times where their homing missiles can perform a bullcrap and follow you around corners perfectly. And hitscan enemies if they're concealed somewhere else and not too far away. As for everyone else they're fine.

Clearly the Revenant, and that's because some mappers seem to think he's just a harder Imp and spam their maps with them.

Re: Most hated Doom enemy in your book?
i used to hate chaingunners and lost souls, but now i dont hate any of the monsters, since they can all be used efectively by a skillled mapper
Re: Most hated Doom enemy in your book?
Pain for sure, I agree with you there, but why HK? Barons are worse as they were designed as bosses and not common placed enemies and sponge up too much ammo.

Barons of hell are at least considered a unique mini boss. Hell knights are just that one powered down recolor of a existing character.BFG wrote:Pain for sure, I agree with you there, but why HK? That's still a mapping fault and not the monster being bad. (Same deal as with chaingun snipers, Arch-Vile arenas, etc. Anyone else remember the Vore implosion...?)Graf Zahl wrote:Clearly the Revenant, and that's because some mappers seem to think he's just a harder Imp and spam their maps with them.
Of the D1 cast, I hate Lost Souls the most. Flying bullet sponges with just enough of a threat to chip HP. (And annoying when they spam their attack sound, too.) Of course, in the D2 cast, exponentiate that for Pain Elementals. (Well-named bastards, I think.)

Definitely Revenants. With Archviles, you can usually at least hide behind something, but Revenant's fireballs can and will track you down. Their sounds are really annoying, but at least the sound of cracking joints when you gun them down is satisfying. Also I don't like skeletons in general, they're supposed to look creepy but they look funky and weird more than anything.

Excluding mapper misuse, the cake still goes to pain elementals for me. The potential for them to flood entire rooms if you're not quick enough to dispatch them is just too much.
But damn, some mappers sure love plastering Revenants everywhere. Worst offenders are those that stick them in tight spaces with little room for strafing.

Pain Elementals and Archviles, because they really have to be used with caution, which in many times outside of Doom original maps, are used without planning.
Re: Most hated Doom enemy in your book?
Revenants. Them having missiles was a good idea to increase enemy attack variety, but way too often I get hit by them just as I take cover. They should be shootable, so if you have good reflexes and aim you would get rewarded with a counterattack window. They are especially frustating in corridors with next to no strafing space.
Pain Elementals are very dangerous, but at least they move slowly and will not spit more Lost Souls if they do not have a visual on you.
I never had a problem with Arch-Viles. Their attack is deadly, but has fairly enough windup time to escape it in time in most cases. The other cases, well - whip out Plasma Gun or BFG and hope you stunlock him or kill him before he kills you. I very rarely see them resurrecting a monster, so this ability is a non-issue to me.

All of them.
Re: Most hated Doom enemy in your book?
Zombieman.
Rly. It have always seemed buggy for me. I mean, green hair, holds a rifle but has pistol attack, totally bad aim, and having no melee attack it sometimes just walks around you like an idiot until it finally realizes it has to shoot (then, it miss the shot). It is maybe the most uneffective game enemy ever!
Apart from this, I guess the common complains about monsters are more a mapper's fault then the monster itself. (But i agree with the critics about the Hell Knight being just a lazy edit of the Baron...)

Some time ago I would have chosen the Mancubus for being a spammy bullet sponge, but now I've learned to dodge their projectiles better, I find them much more interesting.
Now I would say it's the Pain Elemental, I guess. For reasons already mentioned here.
I like revenants, though.
