Hexen 95 - Most obscure Doom engine source port?

Post by patrik »

So, I just found out about Hexen 95, officialy endorsed native Windows 95 source port for Hexen.
But only information I could get was that it came from Towers of Darkness compilation pack. That is all. Well, isnt odd? I mean even WinDoom (technological precedessor to Doom95), which only got released like two prototype builds is more documented out. I presume this is partially caused by it being the only commercialy sold source port, and lack of spread of Towers compilation, but still... :|
So is there any more information?

It's not obscure at all. It even had a retail release of its own (not being part of a bundle that is). It was a later retail sku and could be sought for in bargain bins in the US.

Information? It's developed by the same peeps as Doom95 (WildTangent). The menu is unstable in Win98 and always crashes at the sound tab.

I bought a copy of Hexen from amazon back in 2007 and it came with Hexen95. I'm running on Windows 10 and there were a few minor issues, but for the most part it is amazing compared to Doom95. The installer boots me out for running 64-bit windows but running the Hexen95.exe program in Windows XP SP3 compatbility from CD works great. The only downside is the window border shows up even in fullscreen.

Amazingly and interestingly, the mouse works fine for Hexen95 when Doom95 was notorious for having terrible mouse support past Windows 9x.

Thanks for trivia. :)
I am interested in knowing its unique features, bugs and quirks as Doom95 has lots of them. (E1 intermission screen for 4th episode, incorrect aspect ratio, broken map markers and so on.)
