A bunch of this really needs updating. I unfortunately built myself into a corner, since I upgraded my motherboard in such a way that I would get USB 3 and more room for RAM but keeping the same CPU. Unfortunately, Socket AM3+ doesn't go any further than the AMD FX-8350, which I've been told is not technically an upgrade to the Phenom II X4.

Yeah sadly I've probably wasted more money on this thing than I would have spent putting a whole new one together.

improving your current rig is never a waste of money. it's an investment. the waste of money would be to buy or build a new rig every two years just because something new in hardware came out. once you build your initial gaming rig to its max specs, you are generally good for ten years. during that time you can be saving for a new rig. :)
