Macs and Doom

Post by BlueStar »

With the recently released Mac Mini (http://www.apple.com/macmini/) I started thinking. Is it possible to play Doom on a Mac? And in that case, why not make a version of ZDoom for it?

It is possible to play Doom on the mac. In fact I have a copy of Ultimate Doom, Doom2 and Final Doom (And Wolf 3D for that matter) for the mac. I got them on my mac CD in the id Anthology box.

Of course, I don't own a mac. My wife used to, but it was too old to have a CD drive, let alone play Doom. I did once however take the disk to my wife's work and the files are on there. I even installed it and played it. However, my wife moved jobs and I no longer have any mac access so the disk is little more than a novelty now.

There are, however, very few mac ports.

Add Doomsday to that list - its beta at the moment, but you can get it up and running. It's only just been ported, so expect that not everything will work smoothly.

Other than that, I expect that it will probably be the most frequently updated mac port from now on, because J.Keranen actually has his own mac (rather than relying on someone else to keep "fixing" it every new version.

That's similar to what randy said :D. That mac mini looks nifty though... pitty it's not a little higher spec cus then I could buy one and use Logic 7 :D.

I remember my gran having an old mac... it did have a CD drive, s i loaded up Wolfenstein from the id Anthology Mac disk (heh, I got that too :D) and I was quite surprised... the mac version of wolfenstein is better IMO... the levels are different and you get two new weapons... a rocket launcher and a flame thrower... that's pritty cool if you ask me :D.

Ya know, every time I think of Wolf3D I always want to make a funky wolf style doom kd using strict 64 heights and stuff... I did that once but easily lost intrest... maybe I'll attempt it again at some point...

The other thing about Wolf3D on the mac is that the sprites are higher resolution. I think they are nearly twice as tall. However, IIRC, they are all drawn from the front only - not just the attack frames like on the PC - all the walking frames too.

IIRC wasn't Mac doom more hi-res too?

Only thing that keeps people from making modern games on macs is that as far as game systems go, its less desireable. IBM type machines are customizeable, and it can make them more appealing to develepors. Macs are powerful machines though, but were always more oriented for work than play. Wish more buisnisess would use macs, I remember using macs at school years ago, and it was wonderful. And mac is alot better than this microsoft office shit.

No, from memory it was pretty much the same as PC Doom. To the point my wife saw me playing one then the other and exclaimed - "That Wolfenstein one looks better than Doom". :sadno:

All the "high-res" modes do in the Mac version is pixel-double the screen, if I remember correctly.

May i pose the obvious inquirery of any reason what holds zdoom back from being a mac port? Is there a major issue with porting over the code or just nobody that finds it a worthy investment of their time?

I searched the forums and at least one of the reasons would be that very few people seem interested.

I think lack of interest is quite possibly the main reason. That and no-one with the ability and inclination to do a port has a mac or no one with a mac has the ability/ inclination.

That and the source code still relies much on x86 assembly (if I remember correctly), which will not compile on a PPC system (obviously).
