a Question about recording sounds from sound hosting sites
long time ago, i was used to record some useful sounds from sound hosting sites that you need to purchase them to use for modifying some doom mods. although i gave them a credit, by writing a text file where are they actually came from, it really concerned me.
so here's my question; is it illegal to record some sound effects from sound hosting sites and using them regardless you gave them a proper credit?
if you say yes, i'm really sorry and i'm going to be feel ashamed. and recently i'm not doing this anymore and i always will if that's true so don't worry about it.

Well, from a legal perspective, yes, what you've done is not legal because those sounds are under a license that requires payment. But then, the Doom community already has a rich history of ignoring such licenses and hasn't run into major lawsuits, so any effect this has is largely moral and ethical, with no real legal consequences.

That's because Doom is so awesome that nobody would want to ruin the potential awesomeness from mods.wildweasel wrote:But then, the Doom community already has a rich history of ignoring such licenses and hasn't run into major lawsuits...

Not really, in fact it's a matter of those great corporations don't care about what we are doing since we earn nothing with what we do, so if there's no money involved, there's no legal interest by their part, Doom community isn't the only one who does that.

Or those corporations just don't know we exist.Zanieon wrote:Not really, in fact it's a matter of those great corporations don't care about what we are doing since we earn nothing with what we do, so if there's no money involved, there's no legal interest by their part, Doom community isn't the only one who does that.

i guess also because Doom mods are largely a non-profitable cause, so it's not a big a deal compared to, say, someone make a Steam Greenlight game including those SFX.

Usually, the low-quality samples are free and always available for download (at good sites, that is). So if you're fine with the lo-fi samples, then I guess they're fair game.

Be careful. "Free" sound designers tends to have a lot of theivey bullshitters that claim and misrepresent about the origins of their sounds, like blatant soundideas rips etc. They're so scummy and distrustful I'm producing my own sounds for myself, replacing lucky takes after lucky takes...
