So I finally succumbed to getting an xbox 360 controller... it was notably cheaper than the dual shock 4 and supporting xinput natively meant outside of game development I'd have less hassle playing recent games.

EXCEPT

They have JUST discontinued the 360 controller. Hello xbox one controller, at a 50% markup and it's more or less the same as its predecessor.

Trigger haptic feedback (independent), IR sensors, full stereo sound output (and mic in) as an independent sound device, and interchangeable wireless/wired USB communication. Not really the same at all.
At the end result, they will cost about the same because the Xbox One controller can be more readily mass produced. It's standard supply/demand.

Crap, false alarm guys. At least, I think so.

I assumed the controller got discontinued when overnight it vanished from all the main webshops in my country. I also found a few posts in various places that were claiming it got discontinued.
From checking a second time, all of these posts were dated years back. Probably referring to the older white version. Oops.
Moreover, it appears only the wired version has disappeared, the wireless version can still be found.

What made me realize my mistake is that half a day later the wired Xbox One controller also got pulled from some shelves.

... I actually didn't notice you said discontinued.
But yeah, that would be certainly odd if they did. They still sell the Xbox360, and they still market them as PC controllers as well. They still sell wired versions, however you'll usually only find them as the Windows variants (they are still otherwise entirely 360 compatible).

Get a Rock Candy one, especially if you have smaller hands, or want to use the dpad for something besides weapon switching etc. It's still XInput and 360 compatible. (I've seen exactly one game that didn't want to detect it as a 360 controller, it was probably going by the device name, which is different.)
