Sorry, there's little I can actually do about that. But its also an incentive to sign-up for membership.

I'd suggest you consider a good host with a good messageboard system

What would you recommend? To be honest, the forum doesn't really seem that bad in its current state. I guess the graphics aren't really that flashy and it's pretty basic, but it gets the job done, and it's free.

That.

Beyond, the design is really distracting and I am pretty sure that interest won't grow as long as everything looks that non-professional. Hosting a good messageboard costs about 5 dollars per month including even a domain. Beyond, systems like phpBB (ZDoom is using the same) are free of charge. If people aren't interested in investing a few bucks, they will never gain interest. And believe me: I know what I am talking about, being a graphics designer and working in the media design industry for more than 10 years now.

So being unable to see a full screenshot without signing up to a free forum is a deal-breaker? The sign-up process takes 1-2 minutes. Seems pretty lazy to me dude, just my opinion though.

If we're talking about distracting design, this forum always looked weird to me with its shades of pink and blue. My eyes have more trouble adjusting to these color combinations than the ones on Dumbworld. I don't think people come to internet forums to be dazzled by great graphics and "professionalism". They come for information, advice, and to talk with like-minded people.

Why do I have to sign up for seeing screenshots at this forum anyway when I can do this without signing up on any other page? And why is there a need for good design and comfortable aesthetics on websites if people only want plain information and advice?

Design and content go hand in hand, take it or leave it but I can promise you 2 things now: 1st the forum won't survive a year, it will be even a succes if it's still there in 2016, and 2nd the admin will stay lonely at the pole position of written content in a forum with 10 active users at its best of nothing changes.

...but hey, what do I know #realm667

I never said websites didn't need aesthetics, I said forums.

Again, I have to disagree. I've been to a lot of forums where I've learned quite a bit about various topics, ranging from auto repair to firearm maintenance to medical advice, etc. Most of the time, the forums themselves look basic as shit. There are ads all over the place, the fonts aren't the best, there are no fancy graphics and the hues used are default solid colors. Yet somehow these forums remain active and thrive despite bad design. This flies in the face of your assertion.

I'm sure they appreciate the vote of confidence. I think a forum's success or failure depends more on how many people with common interests are attracted to it rather than how eye-catching it looks. In most cases, the forum gains support from many people first, then it gets built up with better design. Not the other way around. Since there are already many forums for Doom fans, this forum's success or failure is not a good indicator of anything, because these fans already have well-established places to go to interact with like-minded people.

Functional aesthetics is a must, flashy is really not. Being active and actually caring about users and improving the site is how you make it a success, and not a Realm667.

Having to sign in to see a screenshot is ridiculous..
