Favorite non-Doom mods

Post by Kombine »

As the topic title suggests, what are some of your favorite mods for games other than Doom? I'll start off with a few of mine:

Jagged Alliance 2 - v1.13:
Spoiler:
Operation Flashpoint/ARMA: Cold War Assault - Enhanced Configuration Project (ECP):
Spoiler:
Brothers in Arms: RtH30/EiB - Rendroc's Warzone:
Spoiler:
Feel free to make recommendations.

I friggin' love everything based on the Action Quake template. I used to be a real hound for Action Half-Life back in the day, and nowadays The Specialists is my jam, and to a similar extent, Reaction Quake 3. If I feel like playing through Half-Life itself at all, I like to load up Counter-Life, loaded with as many CS: Condition Zero weapon model replacements as I can possibly fit into it, because laying the smackdown on the HECU troops with a Barrett M82A1 and a Raging Bull is one of those things that rarely gets old.

AHL v4, Pain Keep (not Arena, that sucks), BFP (not repacks), Superheroes Q/2/3/Arena, BOTM(lol), ChaosUT2, Forcemod, Shifter, Thievery, TribesRPG, Disneyduke...

Most of the things I listed aren't possible in today's "it modable it support's mod's" games.

also i kind of wish zdoom's modding scene was more like that list and less like a nextgen suprweps.deh

I can't help but wonder what mods you've been looking at, that you're willing to be this dismissive of the entire scene.

Infiltration UT
Spoiler:
(even without the Megadeth, but it's definitely a plus.)

Opera HL
Spoiler:
(sadly not the most agile demo, but it's old enough that I should be glad there's any video out there at all...)

Tally-Ho! UT

Mine: Navy Seals for Quake (by Gooseman), Counter-Strike (Half-Life mod, before taken over by Sierra and Valve) and the (never played) Ballistic Weapons for UT 2K4.

Thievery UT - A guards-versus-thieves multiplayer stealth mod that takes its gameplay from the Splinter Cell multiplayer installments and its aesthetics from the Thief series.

The Dark Mod - A single-player Thief-esque game with community-made content that started off as a DooM 3 mod but eventually became standalone.

The Chaos series A mod family for Quake II and the Unreal Tournament series that adds a healthy blend of oldschool-friendly tactical diversity and utter bugnuts insanity, as well as the world's cutest proximity mines.

Mr. Pants' Excessive Overkill - Because subtlety is overrated.

Nehahra and its related machinma - Given the age of the engine used and tools available at the time, it's still utterly incredible---if an utter pain in the ass to get working on newer OSes.

Thievery UT
MY GOD! I did not know this thing existed! And I wanted to create such a mod for doom someday thinking I had a unique idea going on :D
Can definitely see the potential of it on Zandronum.

As for my own favourite mods, I can think of two, both Diablo-related.

There's Diablo: The Hell which adds a metric f-ton of stuff into the game (within its limits, of course), makes it crazy hard too. Excellent time sink.
Then there's The perfect drop mod for Diablo 2 which I really enjoyed because it turns D2 into more of a singleplayer game with less grinding required to create the build of your dreams, not having to rely on the broken battle.net economy to be able to tackle Hell difficulty.

The Hidden: Source is one of best multiplayer experiences I've had. 8 dudes with guns hunt one invisible-ish mutant dude armed with a knife, some grenades and a lot of agility. Sounds simple enough, but there was a lot of opportunity for emergent gameplay.

Generations Arena. Allegedly still in development despite not having had an update in nearly ten years (don't tell Phoenix I said that, eh?), this is by far and away my favourite mod for any game. Think Samsara for Quake III but with completely scratch-made assets, it separates Q3A's charcter roster into classes based on the games they originally appeared in (with a little bit of artistic licence, of course), complete with all of their respective weapons and inventories. Which side are YOU on? Doom Warriors Rule!

Half-Life: Decay. Originally a co-op expansion for the PS2 version of Half-Life, backported to the PC with meticulous detail. Basically the third missionpack that never was. If you like the original HL, you owe it to yourself to get this on the go with a mate.
