[WIP] Doom 2 From Memory (v5)

Post by deathride58 »

*Working title!

Current progress: 3/32

Here's the current download (Hosted on dropbox, the wad should be about 584 KB)

This will be 32 map wad that attempts to recreate all of the maps of Doom 2 from my own personal memory, with a couple of tiny adjustments to the map's designs to take advantage of gzdoom's features, along with adding and moving some enemies, items, and secrets to spice things up a tad bit.

All maps support 8 player co-op. Not all maps have support for deathmatch as of the last update.

It currently supports ZDoom and GZDoom. There may be a couple of oddities with Zandronum, but it should at least be playable.

I still consider myself a beginner to mapping. I have done a couple of experiments with doombuilder beforehand to figure out how everything works, but I still have quite a bit to learn.
Spoiler: Changelog and previous versions

I really like the concept you've got here; it sounds like it could make for a very nostalgic experience (and a potentially hilarious one if you're memory isn't too accurate on some of the levels). :D

I think it would be interesting to see you try and recreate the levels as closely as possible without adding/changing any monsters, items, or secrets, but I see why you would want to change them.

Yeah, thanks. I will admit that my memory can be pretty bad most of the time, so my guess is that things will start being pretty off by map05. Hopefully a quick playthrough of all the maps a couple of hours before I try remaking them should be good enough for some level of resemblance for the general level layout.

I will try my best to stay as close as possible to the original levels for the two secret levels, hopefully I'll remember what goes where when I get around to them.

Also, here's the current progress on map02, judging from how much time it took for me to make map01, it should take about five days, give or take.

I finished Map02, uploaded it to dropbox, and updated the original post with the link. Here's the link for those that don't want to scroll up. It doesn't include deathmatch spawns, so keep it away from deathmatch for now. I also fixed the issue with the sky of Map01 that was easily seen in ZDoom, but the sloped floor at the start is still kinda broken in Zandronum.

Anyways, here's some screenshots of my remake of Map02

Strange, I cannot seem to open the rocket launcher room in Map01..

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. I just got a little sidetracked, and didn't realize the ledge near the lift either. My bad.

I love both of the maps so far however, especially map02.

I went ahead and made the ledge a tad bit larger and tweaked a couple of things in Map02, the new version's download can be found in the original post, or here for those that don't wanna scroll up

And now, here's the progress I've made on Map03 after a grand total of two minutes of work.

I feel slightly bad for bumping my own post, but I updated the OP with a new version containing my take on Map03. Here's the link for those that don't wanna scroll up.

I also made minor adjustments to both Map01 and Map02.

Here's a couple of screenshots of Map03

Hey, Deathride, just wanted to say thank you for creating D2FM! So far I like the humble beginnings of the project - sort of reminds me of the tension Claustrophobia 1024 and Scythe are known for. Also, although the map and layouts stick closely to the original, your creative spin adds an element of freshness to the Doom 2 levels. Heck, I had a blast secret-hunting trying to find them all and they are in some very clever places or require a few tasks to reach them! Very nice :D

I didn't post this to critique you on such an early project, so what I did come here to do is make a few tiny suggestions. On MAP03 THE FOCUS, you have a teleporter that is tagged as a Walk-Once special. When you return to the map for balancing, tweaking and other minor touch-ups, don't forget to make that a fix as well! Finally, I felt the Chaingunners in The SSG Computer Room on UNDERHALLS were a bit out of place and way too small of a threat in such a tight area. Maybe a Demon or two to push the player back towards the door while the Chaingunner is behind them? Try experimenting with those monsters in that area and see what suits you best. All in all, I had a great short run playing through your work. The GZDoom-specific features added definitely add atmosphere to an already desolate situation of survival.

Played with Dark Doom, and Music Dark Ambient.
