Seems like a great way to get a community split up and divided and arguing over nothing.
The way I see it, if the script extender programmers can't get anything, they'll just pull down everything. No more modding for anyone.

(of course anyone who has the source files can continue their work but how many able programmers are there VS non-programmers...)

I'm not really for or against this, but what's to stop someone from taking a free mod, doing some light "touch ups" to it, then selling it on the workshop? Or vice versa: taking a paid mod, cloning it, then releasing a free version?

This idea doesn't seem very sustainable unless there's some kind of protection going on, or the mods are integrated in such a way that you can't disassemble them, which still doesn't stop free alternatives from popping up. Even then, if someone releases a free mod to compete against a paid one, can the people behind the paid mod have the free alternative taken down if it "infringes" upon their work?

It's definitely going to take a while before this is sorted out. I imagine either everyone will charge for their mods, or their will be so many free clones that mod authors are forced to charge ~$1 for their mod to stay competitive.

I'm not really sure why this affects anybody here. If you don't want to pay for a mod, don't pay for it? The person who makes the same thing for free will naturally get a better response.

On the flip side, the person who puts actual time and effort into something that actually deserves recompense will thus also be able to receive that, thus giving them a reason to put more time into it. Or are you suggesting that you deserve all things for free, forever?

First Bethesda starts the trend of shitty microtransaction dlc with horse armor, now they're starting shitty microtransaction MODS they don't even have to make. What a lovely trend for them to start.

Still Zenimax-related SyncError was kind of alluding to this for Quake Live in regards to workshop. Currently the model is "map for ql, get paid some hundred bucks"


oh boy I can't wait for existing free things by other authors become scavenged as a getrichquick scheme :roll:

Lord, we shall succumb to greed and soon, the very resources are now charged as well! I guess it can work out if there's a split between the fee (hardware, software, concepts, agreements, and so on). There will certainly be a market for lawyers? If one can manage, then I guess it can work out. Remember the Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven being sued by Spirit's Taurus? Yeah, it might be like that and that's bad. Regardless, I know that the black market is always handy. ;)

The problem is that the people who make SKSE, SkyUi and similar don't get paid despite doing a lot of a modder's work.

Alright, business ethics aside, this seems needlessly complicated. Like Steam wanted to copy the Humble Bundle's business model and randomly decided to inject it into part of its business structure.

I don't know what Valve Software is thinking anymore.
